I am just discussing information voluntarily published by a translation agency on their own site. Why limit our free speech like that? If you don't like it, ban me and show your true face. I don't obey police, even if they say please. Translators of the world unite! We are the means of production! | | | ProZ.com is not a free speech zone | Apr 23, 2015 |
Hi Emal, Sorry, but ProZ.com is not a "free speech zone." http://www.proz.com/faq/5651#5651 explains how the site's rules and scope work in the forums. Best regards, Maria | | | Jeff Whittaker United States Local time: 06:45 Member (2002) Spanish to English + ... What is needed is | Apr 23, 2015 |

The problems in implementing such a solution are: 1) The site owner would have to have experience in the industry, but not currently be working as a translator in order to avoid a conflict of interest situation. 2) There would have to be a strict mechanism in place to prevent cheating (creating false reviews or soliciting positive reviews from clients in exchange for discounts, etc.). 3) There would be no way to monetize (and pay for) the site. Most clients wouldn't pay to access ratings and agencies would only continue to pay as long as they maintain a positive rating (jeopardizing the integrity of the system). 4) The legal liability involved when a customer posts a negative comment. ▲ Collapse | | | 784512 (X) Germany Local time: 12:45 German to English + ... Maria, What is Proz then? Any website like Proz would actually be happy that people discuss using its forums, share their ideas, funny stories, etc. And why you, at Proz, make everything possible to distract people from Proz quoting and imposing your formal rules? It is like intentionally seeking to make Proz with as little people as possible and to push them out from Proz to Facebook and elsewhere? I do not get it. | | | ProZ.com has a limited scope | Apr 23, 2015 |

It is like intentionally seeking to make Proz with as little people as possible and to push them out from Proz to Facebook and elsewhere? I do not get it. Sorry to jump in here. ProZ.com has a limited scope, as Maria has pointed out. It's as simple as that. http://www.proz.com/scope The forums were designed to be used, and are used, principally, to request and receive help around translation and the business of translation. People do share ideas, funny stories, etc. But that limited scope means that when you are using the forums, you won't be able to say absolutely anything you want to. Ad hominem statements are not allowed, for example, and a post in this thread was removed for just that. Rose's suggestion of discussing something which may not be within the scope of ProZ.com over on Facebook is a good one. On the other hand, it is also possible to have a discussion like the one in this thread and keep it within ProZ.com's rules and scope. It has been done before. Maria's reminder earlier in this thread was in the interest of making sure that could happen. Fortunately, the Internet abounds in platforms where one may say absolutely anything one wants, so there are plenty of places to make ad hominem statements if I really want to. Most Internet communities which do not have rules that govern this sort of thing at the outset end up creating them over time, out of necessity, and in the interest of keeping things productive or professional.
