Source text - English Normal glucose metabolism is a finely balanced system that maintains the blood glucose level within a narrow range. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder characterized by abnormalities in glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism. As a result, persons with diabetes develop abnormally high levels of
circulating glucose in the blood, a condition known as hyperglycemia.2 [2/2152A, B, C]
Glucose is an important source of cellular energy. When it enters a cell, it can be broken down into smaller molecules, resulting in the formation of energy-rich compounds. Glucose is derived from the digestion of foods such as carbohydrates, which are contained in fruits, breads, and cereals.5 [5/48-49, 108A-109 Fig 4.6, 695A-696A]
When carbohydrates are digested in the gastrointestinal tract, they are broken down into simple sugars such as glucose. Once these sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream, they travel to the liver. While some of the glucose entering the liver is stored for later use, much of it enters the general circulation and is delivered to the body’s tissues for use as an energy source.5,6

Most of the body’s cells can utilize free fatty acids (FFA) as an alternative energy source; however, the brain, the retina in the eyes, and a few other
tissues can only utilize glucose for energy. In order to maintain these tissues in a healthy state, adequate amounts of glucose must be available at all times to supply the tissues.6 [6/980A]
