Japanese to English: Michigan State driver's license requirements (2008) Detailed field: Law (general)
Source text - Japanese
http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127--183894--,00.html

Translation - English Changes in Michigan State Drivers License Requirements
As of January 22, 2008, the requirements for applying for a Michigan driver’s license have changed. First time applicants for a Michigan driver’s license or a state identification card must prove that they have established a “permanent legal presence” in the United States, but the means of doing so is not completely clear. This means that Japanese citizens legally living in Michigan (including those who received green cards before December 1997) might not be able to get a Michigan drivers license. For more details, please see the Michigan Secretary of State web site:
This procedure is currently under review by government authorities. According to the Michigan Secretary of State web site, those living in Michigan under temporary student or work visas can still drive using the license from their home country, but in order to avoid difficulties we recommend the following:
1. Get an international driver’s license before coming to America.
2. Carry a certified English translation of your Japanese driver’s license with you when driving in Michigan. We can prepare a certified translation for you for a nominal fee.
If you have any questions regarding the changes, feel free to contact Tracy Greenwood.
