- The Keno Flo is basically a capture-friendly fluorescent light. What do I mean by that? Well, a standard fluorescent light is green and flickers. If your shutter speed is too fast, your expo- sures will change depending on which part of the flicker cycle you capture. In 1987, the crew of the movie Barflyfigured out a way to make the soft, compact light of a fluorescent fixture work by getting rid of the flicker, getting ballasts that don’t make noise (important for film), and using bulbs that were not green- the Keno Flo.

Keno Flo lights come with daylight or tungsten bulbs, depending on what you need. If you are shooting lifestyle images with available light and need to mix them into other continuous light sources, being able to choose their color temperature is very useful. They also produce a very soft pleasing light, which makes them very useful for portraits. Kenos don’t put out a lot of power, so you will probably need to shoot wide open on a tripod, with a slow shutter speed. I have seen them used effectively by putting four of them all around a lens, sort of like a ring flash, although Kenos are softer and can be easily adjusted via dimmers.
