: Ваш вариант замечательно будет работать, если речь идет о конкретной группе людей (our gang, that gang, etc.). Но "братки" и "братва" часто (а мне кажется, что чаще всего) употребляют, говоря о братках вообще, как социальной группе.

: "братва" и особенно "братки" - это именно бандиты. ADDED: Согласен с А.Демьяновым. И еще - посмотрите Notes Added (вверху, под вопросом), я там случай из жизни кратенько обрисовал. Так что уже лет 10 минимум они себя так называют.

: Да даже "братки" - не обязательно бандюки. А митьковсие "братки"/"братушки" как же? А обращение на улице "слышь, браток" - не очень светское, конечно, на в зависимости от интонации может быть вполне благожелательным...gang/caboodle seems the closest

а можно и не искать эквивалент, в определённом контексте транслитерация вполне приемлема, так как "братва" для многих криминологов мира уже имя собственное...:-(

I think that, though unintentionally, "bratva" could be the Russian Nu-Mafiosi's take on the American-Italian "The Family"; in both cases the familial term has more to do with blood spilled together than the common blood.

К сожалению, я не могу выбрать "Highest" confidence level по двум причинам:
1. Слово wiseguys в значении "members of organized crime" - достаточно старое, появившееся, наверное, в 1920-х, а то и раньше, а "братки" в современном значении - сравнительно недавнее.
2. Чаще всего "wiseguys" применялось и применяется в отношении членов мафиозных "семей", в то время как русское "братва" может относиться как к передовикам организованной преступности, так и к "нормальным пацанам", едва вышедшим из школьного возраста со сферой деятельности в пределах районного рынка.

This only works really well in 1st and 3rd person talk:

\"So, Kolyan and two other wiseguys gave that stubborn idiot a free nose job.\"
\"I don\'t know anymore whether we are cops or wiseguys.\"
However, when addressing others, it doesn\'t seem working too well.
So, in 2nd person speech it may be better to use just \"fellas\".
\"Fellas, don\'t you know me? Would I ever rat on you?\"

: Fellas гениально! Но обратный перевод? м.б. братцы, кореши, и снова не гарантирована категория говорящих. Так ведь могут и кочегары между собой поговорить, ежели его коллеги последний мешок угля пропили и выясняют, кто накапал. Ох, труден наш хлеб!

Thank you, Irene. I wouldn't worry about translating stuff back and forth. With very few exceptions, the technique can mutilate any word beyond recognition.
