Discussion

Yasin Koç Jan 17, 2013:
"Bindirmek" actually makes a comparison between the two different theatrical traditions. Japanese shadow play has advanced so much that it surpassed the Turkish Karagöz and the gap in terms of development between the two have become so vast that they appear to belong to two different ages.

"Bindirmek" has a similar meaning to "out" as in outpace, outsmart, outperform.

It is an amalgamation of two different expressions: "çağ atlamak" and "tur bindirmek". The writer means that the Japanese shadow play has developed and outperformed the Turkish theater.

You would not normally hear it elsewhere.

"Kalay ile bakırın karışım yönteminin keşfi insan medeniyetine çağ (devir?) bindirdi." would be wrong. Because first it does not make comparison and secondly there is a more suitable expression "çağ atlatmak".

"Kalay ile bakırın karışım yönteminin keşfi insan medeniyetine çağ atlattı."

Hope this helps

To advance by an age? Many thanks – are we perhaps talking about advancing something by an age? E.g. if we were talking about ancient history, we could say that the discovery of how to alloy copper with tin advanced human civilization by an age i.e. from the Stone Age into the Bronze Age. (I do appreciate that these ages of the dawn of mankind are usually known as ‘devir’ rather than ‘çağ’ in Turkish.)
Kalay ile bakırın karışım yönteminin keşfi insan medeniyetine çağ (devir?) bindirdi.
(Grateful for any corrections!)

was more advanced (by an era) than/far more advanced than

Japanese shadow theater was more advanced by an era than Karagöz and Hacivat.
Bu kullanım İngilizcede yok onlar olsa olsa "far more advanced than" ifadesini kullanırlardı.

bring something into the modern age

"... brings Karagöz into the modern age." This is what I understand by it.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Yasin Koç : No, the meaning it implies is not exactly "bringing Karagöz into modern age".
