Aug 28, 2007 12:15: Dilek Senurkmez-Wollnik changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Bülent Malkoçlar, Mehmet Hascan, Dilek Senurkmez-Wollnik

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Peer-review journal

I am sure that it depends on the type of journal but normally the "hakem" in this case is another person considered to be an expert in the field and hence the term "peer-review journal".

What is a Peer Reviewed Article?
A peer-reviewed article must pass the scrutiny of reviewers who are experts in the field or on the research topic of the article. Usually you can assume that a peer-reviewed journal contains peer-reviewed articles; however, as always there may be some exceptions. For more information on peer-reviewed journal articles, check out this link provided by the University of New Hampshire.

What Is a Refereed Article?
A refereed article is an article which has been carefully reviewed and scrutinized by scholars or experts in the research topic of the article who are not members of the editorial staff or board. In many cases the article has been subjected to a blind review process by one or more external readers.

In a peer reviewed journal (also known as refereed) drafts of articles are critically assessed by other scholars in the author's field or specialty before they are accepted for publication.

Peer Reviewed or Refereed Journals

A journal is refereed or peer reviewed if its articles have been evaluated by experts before publication. The experts advise the journal's editor for or against publication of the articles. Peer review insures that the research described in a journal's articles is sound and of high quality. The process is usually blind; that is, the reviewers do not know the names of the authors and the authors do not know the names of the reviewers.

Keep in mind that a peer reviewed journal may contain material--letters, notes, editorials--that has not gone through the peer review process. Also, journal articles which have not been peer reviewed may still be of high quality. It is important to evaluate individual articles for quality and usefulness.

Finding/Identifying Peer-Reviewed Articles

Many databases allow you to search specifically for peer-reviewed journal articles. For example, to find peer-reviewed articles in the Scholars Portal databases, do a search, then click on the "Peer-Reviewed" journals tab at the top of the results list.

Q: What is a peer-reviewed journal?

A: A scholarly periodical which requires that each article submitted for publication be judged by an independent panel of experts (scholarly or scientific peers). Articles not approved by a majority of these peers are not accepted for publication by the journal.
