Source text - English What is a clinical study?
A clinical study (also called medical research) is an
investigation to answer specific questions about
vaccines, new therapies, or updated ways of using
known treatments.
Clinical studies help to determine whether new
therapies, or new ways of using existing therapies,
can improve the treatment of diseases. All new
medications undergo a thorough review process
before the authorities allow them to become
available to the general public. In the United States
this authority is the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) and in Europe it is the European Medicines
Agency (EMEA). Clinical studies are just one of the
steps in the review process. Researchers follow a
strict set of procedures and guidelines approved by
the FDA and EMEA. As the study progresses,
researchers are required to report results of the
study to the government agencies that monitor
and protect participants.
RECORD-2 stands for REnal Cell cancer treatment
with Oral RAD001 given Daily. This research,
sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals
Corporation (Novartis), is a study to learn whether
an investigational new drug, RAD001 (everolimus),
in combination with an approved treatment will be
beneficial for patients with metastatic kidney cancer,
also known as renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
What is RAD001?
RAD001 is the research name/code for an
investigational new medication made by Novartis.
RAD001 has been approved since 2003 in many
European countries under the trade name Certican®.
At this time, RAD001 is only available to US cancer
patients in clinical studies such as RECORD-2.
RAD001 is also being studied as a treatment for
patients with various cancers, either alone or in
combination with other cancer treatments.
Experiments have shown that RAD001 can prevent
cancer cells from multiplying. RAD001 may also
block the formation of the special blood vessels
that a tumor needs to grow and spread. Preliminary
information available from clinical studies in kidney
cancer has shown that RAD001 can slow the
growth of this type of cancer in patients.
Who can participate in the
RECORD-2 study?
You may be eligible to participate in this study if
you are 18 years of age or older, diagnosed with
metastatic clear cell kidney cancer, and have not
received prior treatment that affected the whole
body. You must also have had some or your entire
kidney removed.
There are other important eligibility requirements
that your doctor can review with you should you
be interested in participating in this study.
What is the time commitment for
patients in this study?
If you join the study you will be asked to come to
the doctor’s study site every 2 weeks for about 2
years. Each visit may take about 4 hours or less.
How will my progress be tracked?
Highly trained doctors and nurses will monitor you
closely while you are in this study. You will be asked
to return to your doctor’s office every 2 weeks so
he or she can see how you’re doing and record
your progress. At each doctor’s visit, you will have
your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse,
and weight) measured and will be asked about any
medications you have taken or you have started
since the last visit. This includes prescription drugs,
over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins. This
information is very important. Every month you will
have a complete physical exam and you will be
asked to complete questionnaires. Every 3 months
or so you will be asked to repeat radiologic scans
(a computed tomography [CT] scan or a magnetic
resonance imaging [MRI] of the chest, abdomen,
and pelvis) to evaluate the size of the tumor(s) in
your body. Your doctor will do a chest X-ray, brain
CT or MRI, and bone scan as often as medically
needed. If you so decide, you are free to withdraw
from the study or be withdrawn by your doctor if he
or she feels that it is in your best interest to do so,
at any time.
If you decide to participate in the RECORD-2 study,
it is important to follow all instructions given by your
doctor during the entire study period. You will be expected to attend all scheduled office visits, to take
your medication exactly as directed, and to report any
side effects you may experience. This will enable your
doctor to assess your progress every step of the way
through various examinations and testing. He or she
will keep you informed of your status. Feel free to ask
your doctor any questions you may have.
What can I expect while participating
in the study?
While participating in this clinical study you may be
at risk for side effects. As with any medication, side
effects may vary from person to person.
The most common possible side effects of the study
drug RAD001 are skin changes (rash) including
redness, itching, or irritation; mouth lining changes
(stomatitis) revealed through redness, irritation,
swelling in the mouth, or mouth ulcers; fatigue,
nausea, decrease of appetite (anorexia), headache,
vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal distension,
and occasionally infections.
Many side effects go away shortly after RAD001 is
stopped, but in some cases side effects may be
serious and/or long-lasting. Remember to report any
side effects to your doctor or nurse.
In addition, pneumonitis, a condition that affects your
lungs, has been reported in some patients taking
RAD001. Frequently, pneumonitis resolves once you
stop taking the medication. Your doctor will check for
this condition often. You should contact your doctor
immediately if you experience sudden unusual
symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing,
or fever.
Who will pay for the treatment?
The study medication will be provided at no cost
to you. Novartis will also pay for all assessments
required by the study.
Why should I participate in the
RECORD-2 study?
Neither chemotherapy nor radiation therapy has
been shown to be effective against metastatic
kidney cancer. Medications such as alpha
interferon, aldesleukin, sunitinib, and sorafenib have
been successful in reducing the growth of some
metastatic kidney cancers but, more often than not,
these therapies only work well for certain patients.
Patients in the RECORD-2 study will be active
participants in contributing to kidney cancer
research that may help other patients in the future.
Treatment in this clinical study may shrink or slow
the growth of your tumor. However, you must also
be aware that participation in this study may not
benefit you.
What is informed consent and
what are my rights as a patient
in a clinical study?
Informed consent is the process by which a patient
is given key facts about a clinical study before
deciding whether or not to participate. This process
continues throughout the study as participants
are provided with additional information that may
become available.
You will be given an informed consent document.
This document includes clinical study details, risks
and benefits, and an explanation of your rights as a
clinical study participant.
Study participation is voluntary. If you so decide, you
are free to withdraw from the study at any time or you
may be withdrawn by your doctor if he or she feels
that it is in your best interest to do so.

On Friday 7 March 2008, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates (UAE), signed a decree creating the National Research Foundation (NRF). NRF is a funding agency modeled on similar agencies such as the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). These three agencies provide guidance and advice to NRF to ensure that the projects funded, and the methods used by NRF, to make research investment decisions, follow international standards of best-practice. NRF invests in research projects, research programs and research centers in UAE that produce outcomes that benefit the economic and social development of UAE and its citizens.

The vision of NRF is:

في يوم الجمعة الموافق 7 مارس 2008، وقع سمو الشيخ نهيان مبارك آل نهيان وزير التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي بالإمارات العربية المتحدة قرارًا بإنشاء الهيئة الوطنية للبحث العلمي (NRF). الهيئة الوطنية للبحث العلمي هيئة تمويلية تم تأسيسها على غرار هيئات مماثلة مثل المؤسسة الوطنية للعلوم الأمريكية (NSF) ومجلس البحوث الأسترالي (ARC) ومؤسسة ايرلندا للعلوم (SFI). تقوم هذه الهيئات الثلاث بتقديم النصائح والإرشادات لـ NRF لضمان أن المشروعات الممولة والأساليب التي تستخدمها NRF، عند إتخاذ قرارات تتعلق بالاستثمار البحثي، تتبع أفضل المعايير الدولية. تقوم NRF بالاستثمار في المشروعات والبرامج والمراكز البحثية في الإمارات التي تعود نتائجها بالفائدة على التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية بالإمارات ومواطنيها.

تتمثل رؤية NRF في:
"دعم أنشطة البحث التي تتم على أعلى مستوى، وإيجاد بيئة بحثية قادرة على المنافسة الدولية ونظام ابتكاري في الإمارات العربية المتحدة"
ستسمح نتائج هذه الأنشطة البحثية للإمارات بأن تكون مصدرًا للملكية فكرية والأفكار والمعلومات كما ستزيد من قدرة الشركات الإماراتية على المنافسة، كما سترتقي بحياة المواطنين الإمراتيين.

I'm a native Arabic translator. I
graduated from the faculty of Al-Alsun (languages), Ain Shams University in
2000, located in Cairo, Egypt. Besides, I majored in translation studies and
linguistics. I also completed a translation diploma (M.A) in 2003 for 2 years
from the faculty of Arts, Cairo University.
In my attempt to enhance my IT background, I attended
an intensive course in one of IBM Authorized Centers in Cairo and my track was
"Database Management System" (DB2).
I have worked in a number of prominent localization
companies in Middle East. I am currently working as a senior & professional
freelancer (En<>Ar).
I have substantial experience in technical, financial,
commercial, medical, legal, and scientific translation, software and web
localization, English editing, as well as multi-lingual desktop publishing.
