A few hours ago I received a virus that has deleted literally all graphics in all files I have on my computer - and I hope it does not do more than that. I strongly assume that I received it from a proz.com colleague with whom I had a disagreement about processing graphics this morning. A few minutes later I found a message in my proz.com mailbox that an email addressed to me was destroyed by the virus protection shield because it was infected. But I had been so uncautious to give this colleague... A few minutes later I found a message in my proz.com mailbox that an email addressed to me was destroyed by the virus protection shield because it was infected. But I had been so uncautious to give this colleague my private email address too. Obviously my virus protectionin my private mailbox is less effective, and I felt alarmed by the text of the colleague's email ("now I am sending you a processable drawing") that I did an online virus check immediately at

But nothing was detected. Now, a few hours later, after realizing that I do have a virus, I tried to do another virus check at the url above, but it was not possible anymore, nothing happens when I click the "scan now" button.
What can I do now? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the urls. I tried both, but bitdefender could not find anything, and pandasoftware answered only with an error message telling me that this website does not exist (but it does) before the scan started.
The problem is that I have a deadline tomorrow.....
That's life.

I really wish I could help you... but I only have my one-and-only highjackthis to suggest....
Go Google, find highjackthis ... and check the log to see if you can spot the evil exe-files...

No email-virus can act if you do not start it yourself.
Perhaps Word does not show any graphics because you view in normal view mode?
Don't panic. If your virus protection is up to date and does not detect anything there is no virus in your system, hopefylly.

Unfortunately, that is not quite true. There are a number of virii in the wild that exploit vulnerabilities of the scripting functions that come with e.g. MS Outlook or MS Outlook Express. These can actually infect your system when you just open the infected e-mail. You view the e-mail or just preview it and the malicious script code is executed automatically - the virus releases its payload.
Fortunately, Microsoft usually reacts somewhat promptly to these issues and releases a patch that fixes the problem. However, many users do not keep their computer up-to-date (through MS Windows Update and therefore their systems stay vulnerable to this kind of attacks. The best way to protect yourself against this threat is to use an e-mail client that does not support scripting and/or HTML. Alternatively, you could disable these functions in your e-mail program (in OE there's an option that you can toggle - for Outlook, you need to modify the registry to read all e-mail as plain text or get a tool like AttachmentOptions that allows you to change the setting from within Outlook.)
Now, to the problem of Word files not displaying any graphics:
I also have this problem sometimes, but it is easily solved (for me) by clicking Options on Word's Tool menu, clicking the View tab, and under “Print and Web Layout Options,” activating the Drawings check box.

Am I at risk just viewing the email? I don't bother with Windows security updates but my AVG antivirus is always up to date and i monthy use panda or norton online scan - so far I've never had a virus on this computer! I don't use Outlook, just open emails in whatever "hotmail" or "yahoo" extension I receive them in.
Thanks for any info.

I don't know how the Yahoo and Hotmail webmailer interfaces handle HTML mails with embedded scripts. This method of working with e-mail definitely does expose the computer to this type of attack (scripts embedded in HTML code that is interpreted using Internet Explorer system functions), although e-mail providers usually take steps to minimize the risk.
The provider I use for my private mail, GMX, displays all e-mail as plain text but allows (after showing a big, fat, red warning) to view the messages in their original format, should I choose to do so.
