I've rewritten this post after some further discovery:

I've managed to install Russian as one of the languages in Trados, target being English.

I have two files for alignment from Russian to English. The problem is that the file in Russian even when saved in Word doc. format displays gibberish when reviewing file pairs after the alignment.

I'm hoping and assuming that there is a simple solution to this obvious problem. The Trados guys would have created a solution for this?

File Type: Select the file type of the documents you will align from the drop-down list. The file type you select determines the other options available in the general tab. The following file types are available:

Word Documents (*.rtf)

Online Help Files (*.rtf)

Word Documents (*.doc)

HTML Files (*.htm, *.html, *.asp, *.jsp, *.aspx, *ascx, *.inc)

SGML Files (*.sgm, *.sgml)

XML and XLIFF Files (*.xml, *.xsl, *.xlf)

PowerPoint (*.ppt, *.pps, *.pot)

Excel (*.xls, *.xlt)

Windows Binary files (*.exe, *.dll, *.ocx)

Java Properties files (*.properties)

RC files (*.rc, *dlg)

InDesign CS 2 Interchange file (*.inx)

Generic Delimited Documents (*.csv, *.cat)

TRADOStag documents (*.ttx)
