A couplet is a stanza (or even a poem) consisting of two lines. These need not rhyme, nor be the same length, but can be. If there is no enjambment at the end of the second line, it can be called a closed couplet (the opposite being an open couplet), especially if this is a recurring pattern.

Двовірш, або Дистих (грецьк. distichon) — найпростіша строфа, написана будь-яким розміром, що складається з двох рядків, об'єднаних спільною римою (трапляється і неримована) та викінченою думкою з виразними ознаками лаконізму й афористичності. Д. широко вживається як окремий твір:<br />Що доля нелегка, — в цім користь і своя є.<br />Блаженний сон душі мистецтву не сприяє (Ліна Костенко).
