English to Russian: Business schools/translation for Harvard Business Review Russia
Source text - English Modern businesses co-create value with their customers, and business schools can learn from this in order to co-create knowledge with their students.
Take a parallel from contemporary businesses. ‘Service’ is becoming the watchword for value-creation: even manufacturing firms derive ever-increasing proportions of their revenues from services rather than the sale of products. For example, Rolls Royce Engines, the manufacturers of aircraft engines, earn 54% of their revenues from service contracts, designed to give the customer value-in-use, rather than simply an ‘input’ to their supply chain. Airlines want reliable flying airplanes – and an engine manufacturer who can provide that outcome is more helpful than one which simply delivers an engine to the assembly plant. Yet business schools are often managed as if they are simply selling products – theories, programs and graduates.
This is because they rely on a ‘banking’ model of education. Business schools treat knowledge as a kind of currency, and behave like old-fashioned retail banks. The practical experience of mangers and business-people is gathered up by researchers, converted into general models and theories, stored in journals and books, and then sold back to practitioners. Most people have to physically go to a business school to get access to this knowledge – just as they would go to their local bank branch to access their money. Even distance learning is the equivalent of the Automated Teller Machine (ATM): you can download your distance education package over the internet. But this simply configures the issue as one of distribution: the knowledge is disconnected from practice, packaged in discrete parcels posted, e-mailed or uploaded for later consumption. Distance assumes that students – even experienced managers – are at a distance from the source of knowledge – the business school.
Yet if we step back from this image to see where knowledge and wisdom actually reside, we discover that managerial knowledge comes in many types, is already widely distributed, and that real learning comes from creative interchange, not one-way delivery. Recognizing that important knowledge is embedded in managerial practice, we can create business education that makes use of this personal and tacit experience, which we call ‘close learning’. This is what we do at Exeter University’s Centre for Leadership Studies. Students, all practicing managers, use their current leadership roles as the focus for their learning; each has a personal tutor to guide them through a program of sophisticated, challenging and wide-reaching studies, making use of theories and models; encouraging careful reflection, improvements in practice, and ever deeper understanding. Modern communications technology enables us to take the professors to the practitioners; but it requires a new skill set for management educators, and new models of program design.
Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia, provides an even more radical metaphor for management education. coachingourselves.com is a new company enabling managers to learn from their own experience. Noticing that knowledge about customer satisfaction, for example, rests with the managers responsible for delivering it, CoachingOurselves pulls together the people with fragments of experience across a company and provides the intellectual frameworks and provocative questions to organize it in well-tested theoretical frameworks. Companies like SAP in Germany and Sasken in India find that managers hugely improve their understanding, solve real problems, and become more engaged and creative in their managerial work. Furthermore, their new insights into managing feed new sessions for the CoachingOurselves portfolio, thus co-creating management knowledge as well as adding value to managerial practice. This is, in effect, the birth of a Web 2.0 version of the business school – we might call it a wiki-school.
Close learning is a new metaphor for management education, and the wiki-school is a new way to think about a business school. This new generation of business school will be characterized by the dynamic co-creation of value.

На минуту отвлечемся от этой удручающей картины. Посмотрим, а где на самом деле живет знания. Оказывается, что управленческое мастерство – многолико. Оно – среди нас. Настоящее знание рождается в пене живых дискуссий, а не в лекциях под диктовку. Мы знаем, оно растет из повседневной практики ведения бизнеса. А раз так, то в наших силах предложить “прямое” бизнес обучение, основанное на менеджерском опыте каждого из нас. Для этого в Exeter University и был создан Центр исследования лидерства. Все студенты Центра – менеджеры компаний опираются на свой повседневный опыт в процессе обучения. Тренажерный зал в каждый офис?
Следить за своей физической формой - всегда полезно. А сегодня это еще и модно. Работать же, сидя в офисе за компьютером, зачастую приходится очень много. Едва успеешь часам к семи разобраться с ворохом дел, как уже пора беж壍ть в спортзал, «наводить красоту». Причем, нет гарантии, что в фитнес-клубе вы сразу же приступите к тренировке, а не будете тратить время в ожидании своего тренажера.
В общем, вопросов много. В том числе и тот, где взять силы на перемещение в новое место, особенно если перемещаться уже не хочется? Особенно учитывая вечерние пробки и тот факт, что занятия спортом в России дело недешевое. А что, если представить тренажерный зал прямо на территории офиса, рядом с рабочим местом? Началось все более десяти лет назад с офисных спортзалов для топ-менеджмента. Затем идея была оживленно подхвачена, и во многих офисных владениях стали появляться большие и маленькие залы для рядовых сотрудников. Сегодня офисные спортзалы имеются во многих компаниях. По мнению врачей, следствием малоподвижного образа жизни часто становятся лишний вес, нарушение функционирования желчевыводящих протоков, запоры, повышение артериального давления, отеки на ногах.
Мы проводим в офисе более 8 часов в сутки и все это время в основном сидим. Разумеется, мы двигаемся, но недостаточно активно. А сидячий образ жизни не физиологичен для человека. Времена, когда была в почете производственная гимнастика, давно прошли. Ей нужна альтернатива.
«Российские компании, которые заинтересованы в здоровых и активных сотрудниках, создают условия для занятий спортом либо на своей территории, создавая тренажерный зал, либо приобретая клубные карты фитнес-клуба, - рассказывает ведущий консультант проектов Дирекции корпоративных продаж компании «МФИТНЕС» Дмитрий Титов, - Не стоит забывать о кадровой политике в компании. Собственный тренажерный зал способствует поддержанию лояльности сотрудника».
Рабочий день сотрудника офиса заканчивается в 6-8 часов вечера. Как правило, нужно потратить какое-то время, чтобы добраться до фитнес-клуба. Следует учитывать и тот факт, что время после 18:00 – самое загруженное не только с точки зрения транспорта и дорожной обстановки, но и в тренажерном зале. Уже эти обстоятельства способны «обломать» даже весьма целеустремленного человека. Есть вариант позаниматься дома, но большинство людей все же предпочитает общество – так сильней мотивация. Кроме того, психологически гораздо легче приступить к тренировке сразу после работы. Так что для офисного сотрудника, желающего «быть в форме», наличие тренажеров по месту работы – несомненный плюс. Любой руководитель, в свою очередь, напрямую заинтересован в повышении работоспособности подчиненных, не говоря уже о том, что совместные занятия спортом укрепляют «командный дух». Поэтому множество крупных российских компаний уже обзавелись собственными тренажерными залами. Кстати, в России поход в спортзал для человека обходится дороже, чем в той же Европе. «В масштабах же среднего офиса, как показывает практика, дело обычно ограничивается одним или несколькими тренажерами «для шефа», - рассказывает руководитель отдела продаж ГК "ПРО-ФИТ" Дмитрий Жаринов, - Говорить о какой-то тенденции здесь сложно, все зависит от личных предпочтений и образа жизни каждого конкретного руководителя. Что касается зарубежного опыта, то хочу отметить - число фитнес-клубов в любом мегаполисе тех же США все еще превышает количество аналогичных объектов у нас, несмотря на бурное развитие российской фитнес-индустрии в последнее десятилетие. An on-site gym helps to keep employees loyal to the company”. “Moscow and other big cities witness active growth of on-site gyms. As a rule a working day in the office is over at 6-8 o’clock. It takes some time to get to the gym. Bear in mind that this is the busiest time both to hit the road and go to gym. These two factors can cool down the keenest sportstman/woman. There is always an option of exercising at home. However, our motivation is higher in a company. What is more – psychologically it is much easier to exercise right after work. If you are a smart office worm and want to stay fit, an on-site gym, without doubt is an attractive alternative. This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are other reasons for an on-site gym. For example, every CEO is directly interested in hardworking employees. Not to mention that a good work-out in a gym helps team building. Many Russian companies were quick to see logic behind an on-site gym, promptly installing an array of machines. “There are no trends here, all depends on boss’s personal preferences and way of life”. Things are different in the West though. Rapid expansion of fit industry in Russia in the past decade still lags behind that of the US. The number of gyms in any Russian city pales in comparison with that in America. Today any large US city offers a wide array of gyms. And close to the office too. The same may prove rather a challenge in Russia.

Though this grand hilltop manor house dates back to 1672, it has only been a hotel since 1998 — a fact that will not surprise anyone who has stayed here. The feeling is less like a hotel stay and more like a visit to a friend's country estate; though obviously this friend has near-unlimited resources, and impeccable taste in art.
The house was completely rebuilt in the process of converting it into a hotel, but mercifully it was not decorated in the prevailing chic hotel style. These interiors are classic Mallorcan, and the arched doorways, timber beams, and canopy beds add to the hotel's authenticity. The rooms are enormous, with stone floors (heated in the bathrooms) and such luxe hotel necessities as satellite television and air conditioning. Public spaces are no less elegant, and are decorated with artworks from the owner's collection, including pieces by Hockney and Stella, and even a Chagall and a lesser-known Dali painting.
Other reminders that this is in fact a full-featured hotel include the spa and beauty salon and the enormous swimming pool, a full 30 meters long, complete with outdoor cabanas and views of Puigpunyent village and the mountains all around. The restaurant's menu is traditional Mediterranean, rather than flashy new Spanish cuisine, and, quaintly, centers around the island's largest olive press, perhaps as a reminder to stay true to the hotel's Mallorcan roots.
The village of Puigpunyent is charming and historically rich, perhaps worth a stroll down the hill, and Palma, the capital of the Balearics, is just twenty minutes away. A number of shining white sand beaches are just as nearby, and five golf courses are easily accessible — but odds are, most guests will prefer to hole up at Son Net for as long as possible, as this is the kind of place you just soak in.

К счастью, во время перестройки и превращения в отель, зданию удалось избежать печальной участи большинства своих собратьев. А именно - нарочито шикарного гостиничного стиля. И понятно почему. Помимо прочего, классический Mallorcan интерьер, деревянные балки, двери с арками, кровати с балдахином имеют особенный шарм. Номера поистине огромны, пол устлан плиткой (с подогревом в ванной). В каждом из них Вы найдете такие непременные атрибуты гостиницы класса люкс, как спутниковое телевидение и кондиционер. Холлы и спа с предметами личной коллекции владельца отеля, кисти Hockney, Stella , и даже Шагала декорированы не менее элегантно. Есть здесь и небольшая картина Дали.
О том, что Вы - в самой настоящей гостинице не даст забыть спа, косметический салон, поистине огромный, 30 метровый бассейн и пляжные домики с
видами на горы и деревню Puigpunyent. Ресторан придерживается традиционной средиземноморской кухни, а не новомодных изысков испанской. Ее изюминкой являются всевозможные блюда из оливок, обильно произрастающих на острове. Это также еще раз напоминает о Майорке
Местные достопримечательности не оставят Вас равнодушными. Деревушка Puigpunyent - очаровательна и не безынтересна с точки зрения истории. Поверьте, ради нее стоит спуститься с холма. Да и Palma, столица Balerics - в двадцати минутах езды. Также в Вашем распоряжении сверкающий песок близлежащих пляжей и пять гольф клубов. Но скорее всего Вам просто захочется понежиться в Son Net как можно дольше.
