useless so far Jan 31, 2011

I'll have to try this with some "simpler" files, i.e. just text. Tried converting a couple of files that included some columns and tables and the results were completely useless. Formatting was WAY off and there was no spacing between the words. Would take longer to try to clean up than even just typing it all out from scratch.

I prefer to pay my DTP operator Jan 31, 2011

That's why I prefer to charge clients extra for conversion of their PDF files and pay that extra money to my DTP operate instead of wasting plenty of time myself for all these programs...

For the moment there is no program that can do conversion well enough especially on low quality scanned files or those with a complex layout.

Conversion to MS Word (aka RTF) isn't very good, but conversion to JPG works very well.

True...and then what? Is there some clever way to edit JPGs?

No, it's just a plain JPG. How you edit it is up to you. The program just converts -- it doesn't edit.

The PDF converter?
Not too useful for most purposes I'd say - I tested it out on an old contract in PDF form - and it looked like shotgun pellets on a sheet of paper.

www.photoshop.com provide a free online process to edit JPEGs. I first registered just yesterday to crop my profile mugshot you see on the left. No need to download (and pay for) any software.

I guess I just thought that the point of most PDF conversions (for folks around here at least) was to come up with an editable text. I doubt I will find very many instances where having a JPG file is more useful than a PDF. But if it benefits some, then great

My view also. Not sure a SW is needed to convert PDF to JPG, both Win and Mac OS X do it perfectly on their own if I'm not mistaken.

BTW for those who are interested, I just saw that Abby Fine Reader -that provides actual correct conversions PDF-Word(or RTF)- offers a free trial period (15 days with a max number of pages). I think it's new - at least I had not seen it before. http://finereader.abbyy.com/trial/#

I recently needed to convert a PDF to JPG (though I can't remember what for), and I remember that I was not able to find a utility that did it cleanly.

How would one convert PDF to JPG in Windows, Aude?

Conversion from PDF to JPG is basically just rendering the PDF. If all else fails, Ghostscript will do the job most of the time. For Windows, you can use GSView (downloadable from http://www.ghostscript.com/ – you’ll need to install both Ghostscript and GSView). The interface is not exactly user-friendly, but it is a utility that can do this conversion if you cannot find anything else.

The results kind of depend on things like fonts and colour. Ghostscript has (or at least used to have) problems with certain Chinese fonts (most notably MingLiU) and with the CMYK colour space. So results will vary.

Of course, if you happen to have Photoshop, you don’t really need to worry about these things since you can just use Photoshop to do the conversion.

MacOS X’s renderer looks like it has been derived from Ghostscript; as far as I can tell it also cannot handle MingLiU properly.

You could install paperless printer from www.rarefind.com/paperlessprinter/index.html. If you are interested, watch the demo video.

Paperless printer versus PDFzilla for PDF2JPG Feb 2, 2011

Thanks for the tip. However, Paperless Printer does not quite measure up. Have a look at these three JPGs created from my résumé -- one with PDFzilla, one with Paperless Printer, and one by simply taking a screenshot. With PDFzilla, I can also set the DPI, so that the JPG is bigger.

I've been wanting to try that out since I've read several positive reviews on here.
