Nor do I use it for any purposes, ever. I have a terribly low opinion of it in general and the site rules preclude my freely expressing the depth of this antipathy.

Although my antipathy is perhaps not as intense. I really don't get Twitter at all, I've tried it a couple of times and failed dismally to derive any kind of entertainment or other benefit.

That said, my brother and his now fiancee met via Twitter. I still haven't really worked out how!

And I get a lot of information and some work through it. It's also quite fun.

The same goes for Facebook, which I cordially dislike.

No (not for translation) but it can be useful if you use it appropriately... Mar 5, 2012

...for example, I use it for teaching (sharing ideas with other teachers, sharing lesson plans, useful links, blogs etc) and also to take part in weekly teaching "chats" i.e. a topic is chosen and voted on, whichever topic wins gets discussed at a certain time. So when you use it for professional purposes it can be beneficial.

That said, I currently don't use it for translation....but that may be because the translation community isn't as active on Twitter as the pedagogical community, who have positively embraced it.

I do share Neil's view of Twitter when used to air every mundane thought that crosses your mind (do I care what random strangers are eating for breakfast?) or when people are doing other bizarre things like begging celebrities for retweets or follows. #Sad

As others have said, I just don't have time for so many social or professional networking sites. My wife doesn't use Twitter, but she's an avid Facebook user and keeps me up to date with what's going on with friends and family.

I use proz.com If I want professional contact with other translators. It's simple, useful and unobtrusive.

No - I'm already drowned in media overload Mar 5, 2012

It's gotten so I even have to stop visiting ProZ if I want to get my translation work done. LinkedIn has become an annoyance, and Facebook, an actual burden that I dread (must check for photos of new babies in the family or folks will be offended).

While I see that it's perhaps not for everyone, I enjoy using it for networking and feeling part of a community, as well as keeping abreast of what's happening in the translation industry.

I don't use Facebook.

But I also don´t really get it.

Like many others have said, I don´t have the time needed to be active on twitter. I also have a facebook account which I rarely use (used to during my studies). Now I only log in on facebook when friends or family members ask me for some reasons. I have a LinkedIn account and even formed a group there, but I am not that active there either.

I like proZ and I don´t get translators that don´t use it...

It is a powerful method Mar 5, 2012

to market yourself as a freelancer.

And you do not necessarily have to spend hours there.

Still, if you are satisfied with your current position (rates, volumes, etc.), then it is useless - as is any other marketing activity.

I suppose it can't be all bad if you are using it as a tool, what I hate is the frivolity (and occasionally downright rudeness) of people tweeting their footling inconsequentialities and the "following" of "celebrities" etc etc etc, but then again I reserve the right to despise anything that gets up my hooter in this way. I class it along with unsolicited Microsoft updates and reality TV as "things to avoid/despise/ deprecate"...

Not really Mar 5, 2012

I haven't really got the hang of it and I suppose I have nothing to say that I would want the whole world to know. So although I do have an account, it is not worth following me...

BTW: You won't find find me on Facebook.

Twitter does have quite a lot of negatism, too much for my taste, while it's surely a great site for all those who just love to inform the community of what they've had for breakfast or who said what about whom in which manner.

I prefer using XING, not the least due to its advanced privacy settings, or LinkedIn.
