And I have no reason whatsoever to believe this will happen in the near future.
I actually don't understand the fuzz abaut ChatGPT and translation (at least not yet). An MT-engine like DeepL seems to be way better and also more practical to use for translation.

ChatGPT readily tells us it doesn't translate so...
I get the impression that it will cause the same kind of havoc for professional writers as machine translation has caused for translators. So it's not really a threat to us.

Whether a threat is called MT or GPT, it doesn't really matter. You are right, but professional writers, unlike translators, don't reply to such silly offers, they just ignore them.

That is probably true, but 'professional writers' have been using writing assistant software for probably a few decades now. Most famous exemple I can come up with: Stephen King.
There's no reason to believe professonal writers will refrain from using AI if they think it can be of any advantage to them. Endless repeat: you won't and you can't stop it.

You are right, they can use whatever they want. But they don't respond to offers to make GPT output sound "more human-like" at cheap rates. They simply don't (I am talking about professional writers here). Your example has nothing to do with this topic.

What makes you think that a professional writer, instead of writing from scratch, does or will never accept to make an existing (for exemple AI generated) text sound better if a client would ask for it ? Do they have a special gene that prevents them from considering that ?

I was approached by a guy on LinkedIn offering this crap. I didn't really give him the chance to explain how ChatGPT could possibly work as a translation tool, anyway. I just proposed this poll to check with the community if this kind of offer is becoming a market trend. And personally, at this moment, I don't think this is a threat to our jobs.

However, GPT-4 (i.e. the new version of ChatGPT) is often giving me better suggestions than DeepL or Google. I'm using it via GT4T. It's now also available via Intento, as a plugin in Trados Studio/memoQ.
