Can anybody recommend a good (and cheap) software for this purpose?
www.hot-shareware.com offers several such as "Tracks Eraser Pro," "Evidence Terminator," "Web Eradicator." Does anybody have any experience with them?

I've used this shareware, Trudy, and it works just doodly fine. It also nukes all the hidden cookies in your pc that sites plant to make it amenable to pop-up ads.

I agree with Markus, grisoft.com's free software Lava Soft is quite good. Another one you might try, it has several other interesting options, such as a smart spam filter, is Secretmaker, you can download it also free at cdnt.com.

Spybot works fine. It is free (although the developer would be grateful for a small donation).

I'm using Ad-Aware, but that only protects you from spyware and malware, etc. I'm looking for a software that gets rid of the stuff in index.dat, i.e. "all the websites you ever accessed in the last 145 years"

cdnt.com is no longer a valid website, its domain name is up for sale. But I did look at secretmaker.com, a poorly written website. Am not sure that secretmaker does everything I want it to do, either.
Am leaning toward "Tracks Eraser" or sth. like that.
But thanks for the suggestions so far.

I remember trying that one some time ago. Actually, it's so powerful, I'd rather say it's a tool to hack your own computer Is able to scrape out nearly every kind of trace that you leave on the computer's hard disk - but is also a bit dangerous: you've got to know very well what you're doing.
