From subtitle workshop webpage I see it can do "automatic timing" of entry and exit of subtitles. However, must I use automatic timing, or can manually control when subtitles show appear and disapear?

Dear José,
The automatic timing relies on sync-ing the first line spoken with the first subtitle, as well as the last line spoken with the last subtitle. Then the software will analyze the char count in each subtitle, and distribute the time proportionately.
Theoretically, if one person spoke non-stop at a constant pace, time-spotting should come out okay. Perhaps this would actually happen if the audio had been generated by text-to-speech software, all at once.
The idea here is to have subtitles roughly adjusted, so instead of spotting them from scratch, the user would merely have to do the fine adjustment, and only where needed.
Quite frankly, I've only used this feature when there is some long text onscreen (not speech), and I want to distribute the total time splitting the duration of the respective subtitles (i.e. only two lines at a time) proportionately to their respective char count.
Subtitle Workshop is definitely geared for manual time-spotting.

I was just reading the program Help, and could not find a manual synchronization method that allows me to specify when:
1) a sibtitle show appear
2) when it should disapear, and
3) when the next subtitle should appear, and so on...
Am I missing something, please?

can anyone tell me how to switch to frames mode in subtitle workshop? I can see the option to chose frames of time in the left side panel, but I can not select frames :-

Some problems with Subtitle Workshop have been reported with Windows 8.0, some improvement on that has been reported with Win 8.1.
I wouldn't know. I am sticking to Windows XP until the day Microsoft sends some thugs here to beat me up and force me to upgrade.
I have tried all the later versions installed in my family members' computers... Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1. It is visible that it is getting worse and worse every time: more fireworks, visual effects, yet the performance and user-friendliness keeps gong down and down, in spite of much more powerful hardware.
The most typical example is a netbook we have here, the all-family travel companion: whoever goes on a trip takes that one. It came originally with Vista, and performed pretty badly, compared to an almost identical machine my wife has with Win XP. We upgraded it to Win 7, and it got much worse. Eventually, we downgraded it to Win XP, and now it's a top performer.
No idea where Microsoft is heading to. All we can do is hope that Windows 9 or maybe 10 will offer some decent performance and user-friendliness.

Dear José H., and All,
I have given both VirtualDub and AnyVideo Converter a try for burning subtitles, and had no luck with either.
I managed to get the task done with Freemake Video Converter (http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/), and despite having bought/donated to get better burning/embeding functions, I am still not happy with the results.
That said, I am looking into a program that would gime better control on the looks of the subtitles - font type, font size, shaping, placing, etc. Can either VirtualDub or Any Video Converter do that? (In which case I'd have to invest more time into getting either to work). Can you recommend any other that might do what I am looking for?

This is the quality I get from subtitling with VirtualDub on a DVD-sized (720x480, 4:3) frame:
I've been doing it on HD and FHD with larger fonts and similar results.
VirtualDub will execute all the parameters on the SSA files. You can set up all the general parms on Subtitle Workshop, however AFAIK it will reset all individual (subtitle) parms if you reopen the SSA file with it.
To make changes to each subtitle, you may use either the Windows Notepad, if you learn your way around a SSA file, or SubStation Alpha this link has both 32/64-bit download links.
Any Video Converter works the same, with ASS files instead, which are very similar to SSA. The problem here is that - unlike VirtualDub - AVC has no preview option, so you'll only see the results after it's done.

I then adjust the pause to the minimum required by the settings (clicking the button to the left of the pause time). This, in turn, makes the minimum Duration too small.
I then need to manually adjust that timing- the button on the right of the Duration box doesn't seem to do anything
Next, the pause and duration of the 3rd substitle are affected, and I need to repeat the process.
Questions:
1) Isn't there a faster, more clever way to do the initial task?
2)Can the button on the right of the Duration box be adjusted to bring the duration time to the minimum required?
3) Once I adjust the 1st subtitle, can I have the software adjust accordingly - pauses and minimum durations of the following subtitles?
