What’s with this new obsession with AI and CAT tools?

I wouldn't call it an obsession. I think people are genuinely worried about having their services replaced by AI in the future. We will eventually get there (hopefully, not in the very near future). Recently, I received many job offers to help train AI with writing/translation tasks, which I turned down, but we all know that there's a 'doer' for all (menial) jobs.

Iulia Parvu wrote:

Yes - we'll get to a point where we ourselves are no longer required.

At that point we will be replaced by artificial intelligences based on the only thing they know: us, what we're like, and what we do.

Then those artificial intelligences will immediately set about doing what we do:

Creating new artificial intelligences just like themselves, that do what they had done.

These will replace the ones that came before.

And so, ad infinitum.

It's all completely pointless. When are we going to realise that artificial intelligence is stupid?

We've reached a point in human civilisation where we now have the option of being able to do anything, and deciding not to do it.

I rely on organic systems to tame CAT tools.

What happens? May 18, 2023

What happens when you have 'AI incorporated into your CAT tool'? Does it automatically translate everything for you? Haven't the MT plugins been doing this for years?
Does it proofread/edit translations? If so, I might welcome that over overzealous cun.. er colleagues...
As for the question, my CAT tool cannot incorporate AI for reasons I cannot reveal on this forum.

Simulated intelligence May 19, 2023

I've noticed that some of the people who express strong opinions about AI in these forums don't seem to really understand what it is.

For similar reasons, this poll is pointless unless you start out with a strict definition of AI. I would say that machine translation is a kind of simple AI, and I use that as a tool to help in my translation work, but I don't think the person who composed the question was intending it to cover MT.

As I've said elsewhere, in one of the many and interminable other discussions of this topic, I think one problem is that "artificial intelligence" is an unfortunate term: "simulated intelligence" would be much better and less confusing. If we were talking about SI, it would be easy to understand how one could simulate, for example, the intelligence of a frog, or a dog, or a parrot, but for most people "artificial intelligence" means something that can behave in some ways more like a human being and less like a machine.

My own opinion is that AI in its current manifestation (e.g. GPT) is potentially capable of more than many people expect, but less than many others fear. It's a tool, a piece of technology, like nuclear physics is just a tool. You can use the science of nuclear physics to generate power, or to regulate a highly accurate satnav system, or to scan the inside of the human body for health problems, or you can use it to blow things up. Humans decided to use nuclear physics to blow things up (and people, of course).

Likewise, the internet can be used to improve people's education, or to help people stay in touch with each other and reduce isolation, or to spread disinformation and fuel paranoia. Humans decided to use the internet to deceive people and make them feel more insecure.

We're still waiting (with bated breath) to see how humans decide to use AI. I know how I'm using it, but unfortunately, given human history, I'm not optimistic.

But that's the fault of humans, not of AI.

What I notice... May 19, 2023

...on these forums is fear, panic and, as Philip points out, ignorance.

Technological developments happen all the time. Just oversee the period from the year 1900 until now, it's nothing less than jaw-dropping. If we have to fear those developments, we should be in constant fear.

I don't care, because I know that it's completely out of my hands (no matter what other people say). I keep on enjoying my work (even when I'm doing MTPE), I go with the technological flow and

Add apathy to that list as well. I simply don't give a shit about ChatGPT and 'empowerment'.

I'm old enough to know I'll be dead before anything really bad happens. Now go ahead and accuse me of taking the easy way out.

Change from NO to YES May 19, 2023

Ha ha, I just received an email from my CAT provider letting me know that GPT-4 has been implemented to help with context terminology. So no longer NO, as yesterday.

I don't think so, but then again, I'm only vaguely aware that there are MT plug-ins. I use CAT tools only as originally intended, using them to easily recycle/reuse previous translations. In my field requiring creative use of language, they are rarely much help anyway.

Yes, and I am thrilled with that. May 19, 2023

I use Matecat and they just integrated GPT-4 in their new version.
