Hi, All,
This is a term that I know the meaning of but have no idea how to say in English. It refers to a prostitute who has a pimp that "manages" her and takes most of her money (as opposed to a "clandestina", who works, shall we say, "freelance", for herself).
I have found it quite hard to Google this effectively, and am at a loss. I know that, for instance, "call girls" work for agencies. But this is far too high a register for the given context. And also, in the context (contemporary Mexican novel), both the "cautivas" and the "clandestinas" are hanging out in bars and on the street looking for joes. So the "call" part doesn't work.
If anyone has suggestions for low-register terms here, I would be very appreciative (happily willing to consider neologisms, too!). Since the prose is quite lyrical (despite the subject matter) I am looking for something that is not clunky and overly explanatory. A snappy term that, even if it's not 100% obvious, at least makes it easy to surmise what might be implied.
Many thanks!
xLisa

Comment: "Thank you all so much. I wish the system allowed me to pick two answers, since I really think "bottom girl" is in a way actually closer to the meaning of what I am looking for, but I fear it would lead to misunderstanding (I myself assumed until I clicked on the link that it meant something very different!). Many many thanks to all of you for chipping in!"

: I agree - because I don't think there is a separate word for that type of prostitute.

It's a bit conjectural on my part. Thanks Emma.

Note from asker:
Lydia, thank you so much. I had no idea this term existed, and it is ALMOST exactly what I want (with the exception of the "pimp's favorite" part). I've now found that there is a popular song with the title, too! (The lyrics are online and the are horrid!). I appreciate your input very much. xLisa |

prostitute
Also, you might try working girl. Obviously, English does not have commonly used terms that readily make the distinction between one type of working girl and the other. There are a million ways to say prostitute, but none of them have any inference beyond making a simple identification of the profession.
And where you said "joes," the word you are looking for to describe a prostitute's patrons is "johns."

Note from asker:
Thanks, Jonathan, you're absolutely right, I did mean "johns"! |
