English to French Tech/Engineering Patents (in a patent) A honeycomb structure
The honeycomb structure being characterized in that letting an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions, the specific surface area,
and the external surface area of the zeolite be M [mass%], S1 [m2/g], and S2 [m2/g], respectively, an expression of 0.25 < M x (S2/S1 ) < 0.60 is satisfied.

Discussion

Germaine Oct 8, 2015:
Tony, [0009 ] It is desired that an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions of the zeolite be more than or equal to 1.6 mass%.

[0010] It is desired that letting an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions, the specific surface area, and the external surface area of the zeolite be M [mass%], S1 [m2/g], and S2 [m2/g], respectively, an expression of 0.25 ≤ M × (S2/S1) ≤ 0.60 be satisfied.

2. The honeycomb structure as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions of the zeolite is more than or equal to 1.6 mass%.

3. The honeycomb structure as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that letting an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions, the specific surface area, and the external surface area of the zeolite be M [mass%], S1 [m2/g], and S2 [m2/g], respectively, an expression of 0.25 ≤ M × (S2/S1) ≤ 0.60 is satisfied.

imouimou L’expression “characterized in that… “ (caractérisée en ce que… en ce qu’elle...) est plutôt courante :

the honeycomb structure being characterized in that the particle diameter of the zeolite…is…

I think this would be the best way to handle this awkwardly-phrased but basically mathematical expression, equivalent basically to:

let an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions be M [mass%],
the specific surface area be S1 [m2/g],
the external surface area of the zeolite be S2 [m2/g],
respectively,

...and then overall '...assuming this is how we denote these 3 factors, then this equation must be satisfied...'

For Germaine:

It might be easier to follow if I re-write it in 'everyday' EN!

"The honeycomb structure is characterized in that an expression of 0.25 < M × (S2/S1 ) < 0.60 is satisfied, where M [mass%] denotes an amount of ion exchange with the iron ions, S1 [m2/g] is the specific surface area, and S2 [m2/g] is the external surface area of the zeolite."

disagree Germaine : and what about the characterization of the structure? // Je vous concède la virgule, mais ne crois pas mal interpréter le texte source.

I'm afraid you're misinterpreting the source text, there is no comma missing in the EN text; your own suggestion in the discussion doesn't reflect the correct meaning of the source text. The 'characterization' is that it obeys the equation given

agree Germaine : "en ce qu'elle permet" - and it works perfectly in the sentence.
