English term

to go for 20 euros to go with your purchase

English to French Marketing Cosmetics, Beauty
Bonjour à tous,

Il s'agit ici de l'objectif hebdomadaire de vendeuses en parfumerie (vente incitative).

"Selling speech:
“You’re only 10 euros away from getting a complementary gift, would you like to add on a small fragrance to go for 20 euros to go with your purchase?"
"« Il ne vous manque plus que 10 euros et vous pourrez obtenir un cadeau gratuit, souhaitez-vous ajouter un petit parfum à votre achat et atteindre les 20 euros ?"

J'ai un doute sur le sens final de la phrase "to go for 20 euros to go with your purchase". L'idée est-elle rendue ici ?

Merci

@ Asker Despite the poor writing, there's a subtlety in the language here that I as a native speaker can pick up on.
The fact that the writer says "...to add on a ... to go for 20 euros to go with your purchase?" tells me:
1) that they are trying to 'soft sell' — not 'to buy something extra', but 'to add on... to go with'; almost as if it wasn't really buying something extra, just like adding an indispensable accessory...
and 2), by saying 'go for', they are suggesting that 'maybe if you were to buy some other small item, you could try to boost your total and see if it comes to just over €20 to qualify for this tawdry gift' — in other words, I don't have one single item that would necessarily bring the total to exactly €20, but we could try and see what items might be enough? Of course, they probably don't have anything small enough. It's that innocent little 'go for' that is the key here — it's like someone who is 'going for gold' — they're going to attempt to win the gold medal (though at this stage, without any certainty). This is all part of the manipulative way language is used in sales, and I think it's very important to render this technique in some equivalent way in FR

Yes, you've correctly understood the phrase. The original English is not well-written...

souhaitez-vous ajouter un petit parfum à votre achat pour atteindre les 20 euros?

Le sense c'est justement d'atteindre cette somme en achetant un petit parfum.

agree Tony M : The EN is indeed poorly written; the idea of 'to go for' is rather 'pour essayer d'atteindre' — but it's rather a spurious thing to say in the first place!

agree B D Finch : Agree with comments by others about the very poor English. Though, it could be a transcription of actual speech.
