THE ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH
DEFINITION
An ordinance is a Christian rite, associated with tangible elements (water; bread and wine), that is celebrated by the church of Jesus Christ. The term is closely associated with the word sacrament, which is an outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace.

SUMMARY
Among the three branches of Christendom, two church rites—baptism and the Lord’s Supper—are regularly celebrated. Despite this commonality, the three traditions differ as to the proper terminology (ordinances or sacraments), the actual number (two; seven; seven plus), and the nature of these rites. Focusing on Protestant theology and practice, this article addresses baptism, in both its paedobaptist and credobaptist expressions, and the Lord’s Supper. It further rehearses the four major views of this latter ordinance: transubstantiation (Roman Catholic); consubstantiation, or sacramental union (Lutheran); memorial (Zwinglian); and spiritual presence (Reformed).

Introduction
Broadly speaking, Christianity encompasses three major branches: Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. In all churches affiliated with these traditions, two common celebrations stand out: baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Communion; Eucharist). Tragically, what seemingly unites the three branches actually conceals a division involving the terminology, number, and nature of these rites.

Terminology: Ordinances or Sacraments
How are we to refer to these two rites? The answer to this question reveals a deep division among Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches. For most, baptism and the Lord’s Supper are sacraments; for others, they are ordinances.

The name sacrament is derived from the Latin word, sacramentum, which was used in Latin translations of the Bible. The Greek New Testament uses the word μυστήριον (mystērion = mystery) to refer to matters that God once hid but now has revealed through the gospel (e.g., Rom 16:25-26; Eph 3:3-13; Col 1:24-27). The early church applied this term to its administration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, considering them to reveal a mystery of divine grace. When the Greek Bible was translated into Latin, μυστήριον (mystērion) became sacramentum, which could refer to a rite or an oath of allegiance. By the fifth century, Augustine’s definition of sacrament as an outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace became decisive. The church considered these two rites as sacred signs designed by God to indicate a divine reality, a reality that was included in and caused by the signs themselves.

The name ordinance became associated with these two rites when Protestant churches made a decisive break with the Roman Catholic Church. Included in the protest of some Protestants was a rejection of the name sacrament; it had too many connotations associated with Catholic theology and practice of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In its place these Protestant churches put the name ordinance, signifying that these rites were ordained, or instituted, by Christ himself.

Today, the Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox churches, and many Protestant churches refer to these rites as sacraments, while some Protestant churches call them ordinances. Per the title of this article, the word ordinance will be used, but without prejudice for the term sacrament.

CIRKEVNÉ USTANOVENIA
DEFINÍCIA
Ustanovenie je kresťanský rituál, obsahujúci hmotné prvky (voda, chlieb a víno), ktorý slávi cirkev Ježiša Krista. Tento výraz úzko súvisí so slovom sviatosť, čo je vonkajší viditeľný znak vnútornej a neviditeľnej milosti.
ZHRNUTIE
Ďalej spomína štyri hlavné pohľady na túto druhú sviatosť: transubstanciáciu (rímsky katolicizmus); konsubstanciáciu či sakramentálnu úniu (luteranizmus) spomienku (zwinglianizmus) a duchovnú prítomnosť (reformovaní).
Mal priveľa konotácií súvisiacich s katolíckou teológiou a praxou krstu a Večere Pánovej.
Dnes rímskokatolícka cirkev, pravoslávne cirkvi a veľa protestantských cirkví nazýva tieto rituály sviatosťami a niektoré protestantské cirkvi ich volajú ustanovenia. V súlade s názvom tohto článku budeme používať slovo ustanovenia, avšak bez predsudkov voči výrazu sviatosti.

Identifikácia stredovekej sakrálnej architektúry v severnej časti okresu Levice

Územie dnešnej severnej časti okresu Levice, ležiace na pomedzí bývalej Tekovskej a Hontianskej stolice, patrí z hľadiska poznania zaniknutej stredovekej sakrálnej architektúry k menej preskúmaným oblastiam.

Pôdorys a kresba stredovekého kostola pred barokovo-klasicistickou prestavbou.

Identification of Medieval Sacral Architecture in the Northern Part of Levice District

The territory of what is today the northern part of Levice district, located on the border between the former Tekovian and Hontian Counties, belongs to less explored areas in terms of knowledge of lost medieval sacral architecture. In the four presented localities, literary sources reference the existence of medieval sacral buildings. However, no one has explored the primary form of their architecture more closely so far. Using non-destructive architectural exploration followed by geophysical research, it was possible to identify their lost medieval one-nave structures and several architectural details. The preliminary interpretation of the discovered ground plan structures in the context of historical written references point to the construction of the sacral buildings in question probably in the period between the 12th and the 1st half of the 14th centuries. These sacral structures were substantially rebuilt or even completely renovated between the 18th and the 19th centuries.

Čajkov, the lost Church of St. Nicolaus. Horizontal ground-penetrating radar sectional view for depths between 121 and 141 cm with preliminary analysis of measurement findings.

Devičany, Lutheran church. Ground plan and drawing of the medieval church before baroque-classicistic reconstruction.

Medieval architectural details preserved on the ground and the 2nd above-ground tower floors.

The church’s ground plan with preliminary developmental analysis, horizontal ground-penetrating radar sectional views for depths between 80 and 100 cm and preliminary interpretation of findings.

Hronské Kosihy, Church of St. Jacob the Elder. Ground dig and marked uncovered south-western corner of the medieval nave.

The church’s ground plan with developmental analysis, horizontal ground-penetrating radar sectional views for depths between 80 and 100 cm with preliminary interpretation of findings.

Podlužany, Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. The church’s ground plan with horizontal ground-penetrating radar sectional views for depths between 90 and 140 cm with preliminary interpretation of findings.

SIMON EVIN

"To ensure you are heard, and heard well."

Background

My passion for language has always been a part of childhood. Always keen to get to the bottom of things, I've been exploring, studying and learning English, German and my native Slovak with genuine interest to understand, not just know. This led me both to pursuing academic qualification in language as well as to involvement in translating and interpreting very early on.

My education is in English and German Philology and English Language Teaching. The study of language instruction and my involvement in teaching has been invaluable in keeping approach my translation not mechanically but creatively and in-depth.

Experience and Expertise

I've been closely working with a translation agency (MORE-PJC s.r.o.) for a number of years, having started during my studies already. I've translated a wide range of document types including technical datasheets, ergonomics software, qualification certificates, legal contracts, training videos and others.

I'm also experienced in interpreting religious discourse (sermons, lectures...) and translating texts dealing with religion - I've already translated a few books, study courses and numerous articles in this field in close cooperation with religious organizations. This significantly helps me focus on the tone, mood, purpose and other "soft" aspects of the text at hand.

How I Can Help YOU - Precision and Intention

I believe that precision must go hand in hand with the complex communicative intent of the text as a key to successful translation. The synthesis of my experience with more technical texts for the agency as well as with religious discourse help me approach my work from both of these angles, giving me a unique skill-set that will prove invaluable for your projects and purposes.
