In a text of Castilian Spanish to English, speaking of archaeology, appears "mediodía hispano". I find various examples in Spanish, but not the precise translation.

Los antiguos pueblos del mediodía hispano deben a Roma ...

southern Hispania

It refers to the southern part (mediodía) of the Iberian Peninsula. You could say that, or "southern Iberia", but this evidently refers to Ancient Rome, when this region was the province of Hispania, so I think "southern Hispania" would be suitable; this name is commonly projected back, as it were, to the pre-Roman era. I don't think "southern Spain" would be suitable here, since it refers to both Spain and Portugal, and Spain did not exist as such then.

"This process started with the Roman acquisition of the former Carthaginian territories in southern Hispania and along the east coast as a result of defeating the Carthaginians (206 BC) during the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), leading to them leaving the peninsula."

"The foundation of the Caesarian and Augustan colonies marks the birth of the Roman urban system in eastern and southern Hispania. [...]

Thanks very much, Wendy :-) So do I.
agree neilmac : I think "meridional" is more widely used nowadays, but I may be mistaken.

Cheers, Neil ;-) // I'm sure you're right
agree JohnMcDove : Great minds...! :-) / "Meridional" may be more common, but we would have to have stats on this. CREA gives 8 hits for "mediodía francés", 6 for "Mediodía francés" 7 for "Midi francés"..., 2 for "España meridional" 1 for "midi francés"--signifying nothing

Thanks, John ;-) Interesting CREA results: I'm surprised!

southern Spain

3. m. Sur ( punto cardinal).
Peer comment(s):

neutral JohnMcDove : Agree on "southern". But "Spain" is not exactly the same as "Hispania". Ie. "Spain" does not include "Portugal"... while "Hispania" includes the whole peninsula.
