Apologies to suzie and phil, the original question (and discussion!) was removed because it asked for two terms.

So here it is again, one term at a time.

From Operator Procedures for an automatic warehouse system.

Also found in a document online:
http://www.docplayer.fr/15871147-Dossier-administratif-et-te...

Discussion

Keith Jackson (asker) Aug 20, 2020:
Alison, I agree with Suzie! Thank you for the research. Can you post "input station" as an answer? It's perfect as it preserves the IT/physical ambiguity noted by Phil.
Suzie Withers Aug 20, 2020:
I don't have a button to agree with References (I don't know how people do this?), but Alison's reference looks really useful
Suzie Withers Aug 20, 2020:
I think I found the diagram that you were referring to - essentially, it looks like a zone or area in the warehouse for the receipt of goods where they are checked before sending off to the racking. I suggested "goods inwards" or "goods receipt", as these are used in traditional warehousing, but whether this is something different in automated warehousing, I don't know.

Then from this area, they are assigned to a storage location and if this location is "incorrect", the pallet will be taken to the dispatch or rejection area/zone?
philgoddard Aug 19, 2020:
I think this is too nonspecific for us to be of much help - I'm not even clear if it's a physical object or an IT term, as in database. Also,we can't be sure that it has the same meaning in both of your examples. But you implied before that you knew what it was and didn't know what to call it.

Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems
An automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS) is a storage system that performs storage and retrieval operations with speed and accuracy under a defined degree of automation.

The basic equipment of the AS/RS include a rack structure used for storing loads, plus a storage/retrieval (S/R) mechanism with three dimensions of motion (x, y, z). Additionally, the AS/RS maintains one or more storage aisles that are serviced by the S/R mechanism. The S/R mechanism is used to deliver materials to the storage racks and to retrieve materials from the racks. Each aisle has an input/output station where storage deliveries are transferred into the system, or out-of the system; these stations are known as pickup-and-deposit (P&D) stations. P&D stations may be manually operated or connected to an automated transport system, such as a conveyor or an AGVS (see Figure 9.2). [see page 8 in particular]

PICK-UP AND DELIVERY STATIONS (P&D STATIONS). A location at which a load entering or leaving storage is supported in a manner suitable for handling by material handling equipment (also called transfer station, I/O station, feed/discharge station, etc.)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "It preserves the IT/physical ambiguity of the source - and fits in nicely with the rest of the document, too."
