Laut AT wird der Ripple erfasst, um daraus Winkelstellung und Drehzahl zu ermitteln. Einen Ripple gibt es nur bei Gleichstrommotoren, und erfassen muss man ihn nur bei mechanischer Kommutierung, weil man bei elektrischer Kommutierung Drehzahl und Winkelstellung ohnehin kennt. Also ist es wohl ein Patent ähnlich diesem: http://www.google.com.ar/patents/US7668690

Dort findet man auch fast wortgleich den Satz aus der Frage.

Ich nehme an, es geht um einen "commutated DC motor" und die durch das mechanische Kommutieren verursachten Stromspitzen (überlagerter Wechselstrom), die man zählen und dadurch Winkelstellung und Drehzahl ermitteln kann/will.

Anscheinend ist »torque ripple« gemeint, was sich auf konstruktionsbedingte Kleinständerungen der Motorleistung bezieht.
