English term

equatorial distance

English to Greek Other Astronomy & Space
Taking the Sun’s diameter as 0.0093 AU gives the probability of a transit from an Earth-like planet as 0.47 per cent and the probability of detecting a Venus as 0.65 per cent. The greater probability for the Venus detection is because it orbits at a closer distance than the Earth, and so the range of angles over which a transit can be observed is greater. As the inclination of the system approaches the limits of the angle range, the transits cross smaller and smaller portions of the stellar surface. These grazing incidence transits would be difficult to detect, and so any transit which crosses less than half the equatorial distance of the star will be almost impossible to detect with certainty. A chord across the stellar surface that is equal to half the star’s equatorial diameter occurs at 86 per cent of the distance from the equator to the pole. So the probability of detecting a usable transit from an Earth-like world is reduced from 0.47 to 0.47 x 0.86 = 0.4 per cent.
