Source text - English The quality of beer, if we were to distill it into a nutshell, may be described as “all as for wine, plus bubbles.” Certainly there are wines that effervesce, but in no instance do the bubbles survive as stable foam. Despite the fact that too many people in the United States chug their beer directly from can or bottle and a visitor to London will encounter ale (albeit delicious) that resembles cold tea, every image of beer that you will encounter on screen or in print features a rich, dense, creamy foam.
There is no question that foam impacts drinkers' perception of a product. Show customers images of beer with good or poor foams and those with superior foam are declared to be better brewed, fresher, and better tasting. All this is based solely on appearance; not a drop has been drunk in making this evaluation.
So why do most beers display stable foams whereas other drinks, such as champagne and sodas, do not, despite the fact that often times they contain more carbon dioxide than does beer? The answer lies in the presence in beer of molecules that stabilize the bubbles: They are carried into the head when the latter is created and, once in the bubble walls, they fashion a framework (liken it to scaffolding) that prevents the foam from collapsing. The major substances involved are classes of proteins in malted barley (and in adjuncts such as wheat, but not in corn or rice), and the bitter substances that derive from hops.

It travelled to the West over very great distances, and in early times there were many wild guesses and possibly some deliberate mystification about its origin. The earliest Greek historian, Herodotus, is able to tell a remarkable story of how cassia and cinnamon were obtained:
The Arabians cover their bodies and faces, all but their eyes, with ox-hides and other skins before going out to collect kasie. It grows in a shallow lake. The lake and all the country round are infested by winged creatures like bats, which screech horribly and are very fierce. They have to be kept from attacking the men’s eyes while they are cutting the cassia.
The process of collecting cinnamon is even stranger. In what country it grows is quite unknown. The Arabians say the dry sticks, which we call kinamomon, are brought to Arabia by large birds, which carry them to their nests, made of mud, on mountain precipices which no man can climb.

Importance: Abnormal body levels of essential elements and exposure to toxic trace metals have been postulated to contribute to the pathogenesis of diseases affecting many organ systems, including the eye.
Objective: To investigate associations between body levels of trace metals and the prevalence of glaucoma in a cross-sectional population-based study.
Design, Setting, and Participants: Blood or urine metallic element levels and information pertaining to ocular disease were available for 2680 individuals 19 years and older participating in the fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009, the second and the third years of the survey (2007-2009). Glaucoma diagnosis was based on criteria established by the International Society of Geographic and Epidemiologic Ophthalmology. Demographic, comorbidity, and health-related behavior information was obtained via interview. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine associations between blood and urine trace element levels and the odds of glaucoma diagnosis. All analyses were performed between September 2014 and December 2014.
Main Outcome and Measure: The presence or absence of glaucoma.
Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, blood manganese level was negatively associated with the odds of glaucoma diagnosis (odds ratio [OR], 0.44; 95% CI, 0.21-0.92). Blood mercury level was positively associated with glaucoma prevalence (OR, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.00-1.03). No definitive association was identified between blood cadmium or lead levels or urine arsenic level and a diagnosis of glaucoma.
Conclusions and Relevance: These findings in a cross-sectional study of the South Korean population suggest that a lower blood manganese level and a higher blood mercury level are associated with greater odds of glaucoma. For more confidence that trace metals may have a role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, prospective studies would need to confirm that the presence of such trace metals increases the chance of developing glaucoma.

Objetivo: Investigar associações entre níveis corporais de metais-traço e a prevalência de glaucoma em um estudo transversal de base populacional.
Desenho de Estudo, Contexto e Participantes: Foram disponibilizados índices sanguíneos e urinários de elementos metálicos e dados sobre doenças oculares de 2.680 indivíduos, comidades a partir de 19 anos, participando da quarta AvaliaçãoNacional de Saúde e Nutrição da Coreia entre 1º de janeiro de 2008 e 31 de dezembro de 2009, segundo e terceiro anos da avaliação (2007-2009). O diagnóstico de glaucoma se baseou em critérios estabelecidos pela Sociedade Internacional de Oftalmologia Geográfica e Epidemiológica. Informações demográficas ou referentes acomorbidade e a práticas relacionadas à saúde foram obtidas por meio de entrevistas. Aplicaram-se análises de regressão logística múltipla a fim de determinar associações entre níveis de elementos-traço no sangue ou na urina e a probabilidade de diagnóstico de glaucoma. Todas as análises foram realizadas entre setembro e dezembro de 2014.
Medida de efeito: Presença ou ausência de glaucoma.
Desfecho primário: Após ajustes a possíveis fatores de confusão, o nível de manganês no sangue foi negativamente associado à probabilidade de diagnóstico de glaucoma (razão de risco [OR], 0,44; 95% de IC, 0,21 - 0,92). O nível de mercúrio no sangue foi positivamente associado à prevalência de glaucoma (OR, 1,01; 95% de IC, 1,00 - 1,03). Sua análise é baseada em padrões pré-cadastrados e comportamento específicos, baseando-se no áudio e na sinalização da ligação. A partir dessa analise é possível reconhecer, por exemplo, caixa postal, tom de portabilidade, equipamento de fax etc., sendo possível assim, tomar ações para cada tipo de situação.
O algorítimo do Star Analysis utiliza uma combinação de informações de sinalização e de análise de áudio para determinar, com maior nível possível de acerto, o que está havendo com a chamada, durante o seu progresso, e caso haja atendimento, que tipo de entidade a atendeu: uma pessoa, uma secretária eletrônica, ou se a chamada foi atendida por um erro de sinalização.
O novo algorítimo é capaz de ser alimentado, o que quer dizer que não é necessário uma nova versão de software para cada novo padrão a ser detectado, basta apenas que se instale um novo arquivo de padrões.
Exemplos de uso
Este recurso é tipicamente usado em aplicações de discagem automática, para otimizar recursos, evitando que chamadas indesejadas sejam atendidas pela operação. Alguns exemplos de uso são:
• Ao detectar uma caixa postal de celular ou uma secretária eletrônica, deixar uma mensagem para o usuário e desligar
• Ao detectar que a chamada foi atendida por um aparelho de fax, enviar um fax
• Ao detectar que a chamada foi interceptada com uma mensagem de falha temporária, agendar uma nova ligação para o mesmo número em outro momento
• Ao detectar que a chamada foi interceptada com uma mensagem de número não existe, desligar e remover a chamada do banco de dados
Algumas destas informações podem ser obtidas através da sinalização da chamada, entretanto, devido à grande expansão no número de operadoras de serviço, esta informação pode estar incompleta, ou até inconsistente.
Neste sentido o Star Analysis pode ser usado também para avaliar se os códigos de erro enviados pelas operadoras estão coerentes com o que está acontecendo na linha, em termos de áudio.

Star Analysis is a resource for analyzing customer support in the field of telecommunications. Its analyses are based on previously registered patterns and specific behaviors, according to the audio and signaling of the call. With this analysis it’s possible to recognize, for example, voicemail, a portability tone, fax equipment, etc., enabling actions for each type of situation.
Star Analysis’ algorithm uses a combination of signaling information and audio analysis to determine, with a higher rate of success, what is happening in the call while it is in progress and, in case the call is picked up, what type of entity answered: a person, an answering machine, or if the call was answered with a signaling error.
New algorithms can be added, which means there’s no need for a new version of the software for each new pattern detected. All you have to do is install a new patterns file.
Examples of use
This resource is typically used in automatic dialing applications to optimize resources, keeping unwanted calls from being answered during the operation. A few examples of use are:
• After detecting voicemail or an answering machine, leaving a message for the user and hanging up
• After detecting that the call was picked up by a fax machine, sending a fax
• After detecting that the call was intercepted with a temporary error message, scheduling a new call to the same number at a different time
• After detecting that the call was intercepted with an inexistent number message, hanging up and removing the number from the database
Some of this information may be obtained through call signaling. However, due to the great increase in the number of carriers, this information may be incomplete or even inconsistent.
In this way, Star Analysis can also be used to evaluate whether the error codes sent by the carriers are in accordance with what’s happening on the line in terms of audio.

Hello, I'm Alex, a 31-year-old native Brazilian with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics from the University of São Paulo.
Ever since childhood I've had a great interest in languages, and English has always been the one I was most exposed to, aside from my native Portuguese.
I picked up most of my English by myself, from watching American movies, listening to popular music and reading all sorts of things on the internet, from blog posts and user comments to news articles and even full books. Because of this organic approach (as opposed to going to actual language schools) I feel I have acquired a vast knowledge of not only the English language, but, most notably, of English-speaking culture, mainly American. With that background, in 2015 I was able to achieve a TOEFL score of 653, reaching the advanced level C1.
In 2008 I started working as a Portuguese tutor for foreigners in Brazil, which turned out to be a surprisingly enriching activity, to have personal contact with travelers from all around the world. I briefly taught English to Brazilians as well.
In the following years, while still teaching, I had the opportunity of engaging in other job experiences that involved my English knowledge, and one of them was as a translator. But it wasn't untill 2015 that I really began focusing on translation services over other types of work.
I've handled material from a range of fields, including IT, e-commerce, marketing and even pharmaceutical texts. Although I would have to admit that my true passion lies in literary works.
