In the Action menu select Tags > Automatic transfer of remaining tags:

1-menu

CafeTran Espresso will now place all tags at the end of the segments. This means that you will have to insert tags for bold, italics etc. via the context menu:

2-context-menu

Note that this is only possible with Ms Office documents.

For instance, in this segment you add tags for italics and bold (you can also type i, Esc / b, Esc to insert the tags):

3-example

When you navigate to the next segment, CafeTran Espresso will add one red tag at the end of the segment, that represents all tags present in the source segment. To see this tag, you have to navigate back to the segment:

4-tag-at-end

Sometimes (especially with OCR'd documents), you have loads of tags in a segment, which makes it difficult to see what they stand for:

5-complex-seg

Just add the formatting that you want to keep, let CafeTran Espresso do the rest:

6-complex-bold

You can also add character formatting to the target segment when this formatting isn't present in the source segment:

7-extra-formatting

BTW: Did you know that CafeTran Espresso also has a built-in import filter for OCR'd Ms Word documents? It's here:

8-ocr-filter

And with this filter, the heavily formatted segment looks like this:

9-ocr-filter-segment

Keyboard shortcuts for character formatting Jan 5, 2023

A third way to add character formatting is via the keyboard shortcuts:

Ctrl+b / Cmd+B for bold
Ctrl+i / Cmd+i for italics
Ctrl+u / Cmd+u for underlined
Ctrl+Shift+b / Cmd+Shift+b for subscript
Ctrl+Shift+p / Cmd+Shift+p for superscript
[Set your own keyboard shortcut] for highlight

You can set your own keyboard shortcut to insert highlight:

Try to use Unicode Jan 5, 2023

Try to use Unicode whenever possible. So instead of using a character from the Windings character set, requiring a font change, use a similar Unicode character:

The first arrow is a Windings character, the second one a Unicode character.

Although it looks like the second one requires a font change, this actually isn't true:

The exported document (CafeTran Espresso inserted one tag at the end of the segment):

Replace subscript and superscript characters with their Unicode equivalents, whenever possible.

TIP: See this list for replacing Windings with Unicode.

TIP: PopChar allows you the describe or draw the Unicode character you're looking for:

Another way to achieve this is to omit or "forget" inserting the tags. Friendly and ever so helpful CafeTran Espresso will display this dialogue box:

Here you can click the Automatic transfer of tags button.
