Thank you for your reply, expressisverbis.
While looking at the items under the Help tab in MultiTerm, I noticed there was a choice to check for upgrades. Sure enough, there was Service Release 1. I installed it and now there are no problems.
I will never know why the previous version did not work, but that doesn't matter now.

You will. This is because SR is sort of upgrade, not a mere update. It is like a new piece of software. That is why you need Mutiterm SR1 too. You will have to do the same for Trados SR2 when they release it (if any). You can monitor new updates and upgrades from time to time to make sure that you always have an up-to-date version.
