Στις αιωρούμενες καλλιέργειες (suspension cultures), τα κύτταρα διατηρούνται σε υγρό υπόστρωμα. Η έναρξη της καλλιέργειας γίνεται αραιώνοντας κατάλληλα καλ-λιέργειες σταθερής φάσης 5-50 φορές σε διαστήματα 7-21 ημερών, με ελάχιστο χρό-νο διπλασιασμού τη μία ημέρα. Οι καλλιέργειες μπορεί να είναι μαζικές ή συνεχείς.
