| Beware of Norton and Sympatico DSL | Oct 11, 2004 |
I don't remember the exact details, but when I tried to install Norton Internet Security, it conflicted with my Bell Sympatico high speed internet connection. On searching in Google, I found that this was a known problem and I found instructions (on Bell Sympatico's web site?) on how to configure my system to solve this. However, the solution did not work, and I ended up uninstalling Norton in disgust. I thought I'd mention this in case you also use Bell Sympatico DSL.

However, the solution did not work, and I ended up uninstalling Norton in disgust. I thought I'd mention this in case you also use Bell Sympatico DSL.
The solution I now use is the Freedom Internet Security package provided by Bell Sympatico. This costs CAD 4.95 per month and one licence can be used on up to three computers. However, be careful not to let Sympatico talk you into buying the MSN Premium package, which will give you a lot of headaches. Among other things, when you register, you will be transferred to an "enhanced platform" (in other words, a different server). The problem is that Sympatico don't tell you that, so you suddenly find that your e-mail client is unable to access your mailbox - because the server has a different name (which you will only be told if you call Sympatico). The SMTP setup will have to be changed also (something which they don't tell you either). Finally, the spam filter on the advanced platform is so strict that it effectively stops ALL e-mail from the outset, so you will have to switch it off if you want to be able to receive legitimate e-mail! Either that or you will have to log on to the server and check the contents of the spam folder every day to ensure that it doesn't contain legitimate e-mail - which rather defeats the object of a spam filter, doesn't it?
Anyway, the fact is that you CAN have the Freedom Internet Security package alone, without registering for MSN Premium. Problem is that Sympatico don't tell you that unless you specifically ask about it. Even then, some of their customer services people do not know about it themselves, which was why I ended up with MSN Premium, against my wishes, and spent a whole working day trying to get my e-mail client set up again so that I could receive and send e-mail! ▲ Collapse
