I have just heard that Central TAFE in Perth organizes a 2 months/20 hours course called "Health Interpreting Certificate Course" this winter. It is too late to register for this year, but since this course has been offered every year for 17 years, I was wondering if any of you had followed this course in the past, and if you had found it interesting. I heard there will be a "Mental Health Interpreting Course" later this year, though.

I don't have any problems with Health Interpreting, on the other hand, but I thought it might be nice to earn an extra Certificate. If the course is really boring though...it would be 20 very long hours (I have already been to two NAATI seminars, one was great and the other one...well, I learnt absolutely nothing and was very disappointed).
I also think it can be claimed as Professional Development with NAATI, but I don't know how many points it would provide compared to the relatively more expensive NAATI seminars. ▲ Collapse

I know that some of my AUSIT colleagues have done this course in the past so I will post a similar query on the AUSIT e-Bulletin and see if I can get some information for you. Regarding the PD points the combined NAATI/AUSIT/ASLIA PD points logbook indicates that you would get 40 PD points for such courses of between 10 and 20 hours.

I know what you mean about the NAATI workshops, they tend to offer the same material every year and not all of it is very interesting. I never manage to go to them because of the inconvenient times - always a 9 a.m. start (not family friendly) and the location is a long drive through peak hour traffic from where I live. There are a couple of interpreting workshops at the Naati offices in July and August which could be of interest. "Interpreting in the health sector" on 23 July and "Interpreting for trauma vicitims" on 13 August. I will let you know through this forum about other PD events happening in Perth.

I have heard about "Interpreting in the health sector" on 23 July and "Interpreting for trauma vicitims" on 13 August, and that is also why I asked this question.
In fact, going to these two 3 hours long seminars would end up being more expensive than taking the 20 hours long course at TAFE. Since the topics are pretty similar, it would be nice to know which is more interesting (not only in terms of money or time, but in terms of contents).

I will definitely go to the NAATI seminar about taxation though, because when I arrived to Australia I went to the free 3 hours seminar for small businesses offered by the Taxation Office but much of the information provided was not relevant for our industry. ▲ Collapse

You are right, the NAATI seminars are pretty expensive. I don't know if the taxation seminar is all that relevant to our industry either, I know that they just get someone from the tax office, but whether they know the ins and outs of our particular industry is another matter. My advice on taxation is quite simple - get an accountant to do it! It really doesn't cost that much, I think I pay a couple of hundred dollars, but it saves a lot of time and hassle in working out what you can claim, w... It really doesn't cost that much, I think I pay a couple of hundred dollars, but it saves a lot of time and hassle in working out what you can claim, what you can depreciate etc. And of course the cost of an accountant is a deductible business expense too. We tried doing our taxes by ourselves when we first moved here but it transpired that we made quite a few mistakes and ended up having to pay the tax office back, or missing out on entitlements because we didn't know the ins and outs.
Awaiting feedback on the Tafe course from my AUSIT colleagues, will let you know.

I jsut checked and it cost me $275 last year - for me, worth every cent! Just not worth the hassle if you are new to the country.....

So, I would say, yes, take the course!”
“Yes, I did it years ago and it is useful for a newcomer but not to the
experienced person. If she started interpreting only a few years ago then I
would say go for it. It covers various topics within the health interpreting
arena.”

The program coordinator finally called me one day before the first course to tell me that I could join, which I did.
Each course is divided into two sections : the first hour is a lecture by a health specialist on a specific subject (last week was about infectious diseases) which I found quite interesting and helpful. We also receive a long list of vocabulary that we have to translate into our working language(s) = helps to create a personal glossary.

The second hour is more of a general discussion about the general practise of Health Interpreting, which I personnally found less interesting since most of the other participants seem to have little experience of Interpreting.
But altogether, I found the first class quite interesting. It is also a good experience to meet collegues who come from many different countries. ▲ Collapse
