Your first options are correct in all three cases, but the use of the definitive article in no. 3 is probably incorrect unless you are referring to specific tensions, which are problably already identified in the text. In PT the definite article is used to refer to something in general terms e.g. "os médicos curam mais do que matam", while in EN the definite article is not used, e.g. "doctors cure more than they kill".
