Can anyone recommend a good antispyware tool that is not incompatible with McAfee antivirus software and firewall?

thanks

Spybot-S&D and Ad-Aware Apr 27, 2008

First of all, I would recommend getting rid of McAfee as soon as your subscription runs out - when it comes to the bottom of the barrel in commercial anti-virus software, McAfee's right up there (or down there, actually) with Norton. Get Kaspersky or NOD32 instead.

Getting back to your question, however - get both Spybot S&D and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. You can run both on the same computer and, as far as freeware goes, they do a magnificent job of taking care of your computer when co

Getting back to your question, however - get both Spybot S&D and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. You can run both on the same computer and, as far as freeware goes, they do a magnificent job of taking care of your computer when compared to other anti-spyware programs. However, please bear the following in mind:

1) I don't use either one of them on my work computer(s), so I'm not sure of whether or not you can use Ad-Aware for anything other than personal purposes (i.e. not for your work station), although I'm almost 100% positive that you can use Spybot S&D regardless of what you use your computer for.

2) McAfee runs fine with SpyBot, but apparently had some problems running together with Ad-Aware back in 2006. If the reports (Internet forums, actually) are correct, the problem has long been solved. It seems that McAfee, much like Norton, Microsoft, etc. just loves unfair competition and blocking out competing applications whenever possible - even if there's no good reason for doing so.

Almost forgot: For added security, and if you don't have one already, get a router with firewall features. It's a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment, and it works wonders (although it's still not a hardware firewall, which is the real deal).

I don't know about others, but if you use Kaspersky, you don't need any additional application to guard you against Spyware/Adware/Whatever ware, Kaspersky does it all. Just go to Settings-Threats and exclusions and check to protect you from all.

Actually I think such an option should be there in all major Antiviruses.

From other advanced Kaspersky options I use Registry Guard, but not Application Activity Analyzer or Application Integrity Control. Two later are useful, of course, and gives you an extra protection,
but I haven't had any incidents even with my lower settings and the 2 mentioned can be annoying at times, as they keep you pestering with various security messages (Do you really want to allow Word to access the Registry?).

And yes, hardware rooter doesn't hurt- Linksys I have to outside hacker looks like full-fledged Windows computer, though it's running a very cut-down version of Linux and I'm told it's virtually impossible to hack past that

AdAware is fine but... Apr 28, 2008

the free version does not provide resident scanning, i.e. it only performs on-demand scans.
You need the paid version for the program to run in the background.

Microsoft (there, I've said it) offers Windows Defender, which runs in the background and is supposed to work well (its ancestral roots run to Giant Antispyware, which apparently was an excellent program). Windows Defender is free.

Other than that, Kaspersky and NOD32 suites seem to get top notes consistent

Other than that, Kaspersky and NOD32 suites seem to get top notes consistently in tests, user forums etc.
