This morning I let Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 do a complete scan. There is a list of "detected threats" including Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/WINWORD.EXE and OUTLOOK.EXE, among others.
Is this a joke or should I really put these files into quarantine?

Regards
Heinrich

Try another free Antivirus program Jan 31, 2009

Update Kaspersky with the latest version and re-run the scan. If you still get the same message, download AVG or another free Antivirus program and have it scan your computer. Did Kaspersky report any specific virus?

Try scanning with Outlook and Word closed Jan 31, 2009

To me, it just means that those threads (processes) are active, without any viral implications.
Have a good weekend,
Philippe

NOD 32 Jan 31, 2009

I recommend you to use ESET NOD 32 antivirus software. It is pretty good to scan files and find threats. It does not overstrain the computer by stealing performance of the CPU and ram.

I have almost tried all virus protection softwares including Northon, AVG, Kaspersky. I have gained the best performance with NOD 32 among all.

I agree with Andrzej, a threaD is not a threaT

Kaspersky lists a dozen or so files under the title "Detected threats". Sorry I wrote "threads" initially.
I wonder what this software is worth when it detects Winword.exe and outlook.exe among the most important security issues on my system.

Not much worth Jan 31, 2009

In a recent test of Internet security software by a Polish PC magazine Kaspersky achieved the proud 8th place of ... 8 software suits.

The main weakness according to the testers - lack of reliability.

The winners were:
1) Norton Internet Seurity 2009
2) McAfee Internet Security 2009
3) F-Secure Internet Security 2009

Best regards

A.

Ok Feb 1, 2009

I ran AVG, which found no infection.
I had the impression that Kaspersky's reputation was good. At least nothing is wrong with the system, after three months using Kaspersky.
Thank you all for your advice!

About threats in Microsoft Feb 1, 2009

There might have been something Kaspersky didn't know and this way it classified it as a thread.

I use ESET Smart Security (the producer of NOD 32, but this is anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall - all in one). It works all right, once you "teach it" what is a friendly program and what is not.

Still - on my colleague's computer it does classify an Outlook Express backed-up mail file as a threat.

When you see such a thing - no need to worry.
