Sorry I'm writing again (I won't make it a habit).
I wonder if someone could please tell me how to unstall Norton Antivirus (2005), or where to get information on how to do it. I bought my computer last January and decided to try the free version of this for some months. Now it has expired and have opted for a diferent antivirus programm.

I've been looking in the forums but the only thing I got clear is that I should unstall Norton before I go on to install the other. It is funny that when I go to Start>Programms I get the option of Unstalling with almost all but for Norton!
I tried to delete it from the Program Files, but couldn't (maybe for the better...).
Please, anyone could help?

Go to Start - Control Panel - Software and there choose Norton AV and click on "Remove".
This should do the job for you.
Here is a short description I found on Symantec home page:
Uninstall and reinstall your Norton product
1 Do one of the following:
On the Windows XP taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.
On the Windows 2000 taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

After Jerzy's workaround.
Windows key + R (or over Start -> Run)
into the dialog field write regedit.exe
Ctrl + F (if your Windows is Spanish maybe it is Ctrl + B)
Search for Norton
delete the entry you, for sure, will find.
F3
delete the next one
F3
etc. (maybe really a lot!!)
till all Norton register are deleted

I have experienced this myself, alas! That drove me nearly crazy and I had to use a registry cleaner, Tune-up and I don't
remember what else.
I see now on Symantec's homepage they even offer an "uninstall tool".... You can always try

Possibly you had Norton 2003 - it was hard to deinstall that.
Also when you delete a file from the program folder you will get trouble when deinstalling.

I followed Jerzy's instructions and then installed the new software (by the way: AVG, from grisoft, recommended by a friend) and it all seems ok.

You have to open the application regedit.exe.
In Regedit you have to search for "Norton"
and delete all files that contents this word,
but not delete regedit.exe!!"

Some time ago I asked the same question in the Italian forum and I was told to download a free uninstaller like "Your Uninstaller" which found all the hidden files. This worked very well in no time at all.

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security this week and used jv16 power tools (free evaluation version). All is fine now.
I wouldnt dare to use regedit.
Hope it works in your case too.

I deleted the one (only one) file I found when I searched in the application. I could not open the other two files (extension .pl, I think), so I'll ask a friend to come over. Thank you for warning me, as I would have deleted the .exe files altogether otherwise...

The uninstaller doesn't uninstall... it just finds the ininstalling features of each software and shows you were they are. You don't run any risks (touching Regedit is a lot more dangerous).
Anyway, I hope that by now you've solved the problem!

Well, here is my STOP PRESS - it turns out that the reason why Norton did not appear in XP's installed Programmes list was that it had been installed with a Hewlett Packard application that you need to use to delete / re-install the pre-installed programmes that came with the Portable.
When I discovered this, I thought my problems were over. I'm afraid not.
When I ran the programme it told me I couldn't use it unless Norton had been disabled.
It gave easy to follow instructions on how to do this and I followed them to the letter. But when I clicked on the programme again I got the same message.
I tried opening Norton and switching everything off there - ignoring all the dire warning signs - but that didn't work either - still the same message. "Switch Norton off First"
So, unless anyone here has any bright ideas I am going to either have to take it back to the shop and get them to do it, or else eat humble pie and pay Norton for another year of "protection" - it sounds like a protection racket if you ask me!

Sorry to hear it is being so difficult to remove it in your case, maybe the problem has to do more with Hewlett Packard. In my case (fingers crossed) it all worked out ok (I followed Jerzy's and Fernando's suggestions so far), but my laptop is not HP.
Also, my version of Norton was the 2005 one. If yours was older, maybe that is why is prooving so difficult.
I can only suggest that may be HP support service could help.

Open the tab "processes" (I'm not sure about the name, I have a French XP) - that's the second tab.
There you have a list of running processes. Close everything that seems to look like being from Norton (and if you close more, it doesn't actually matter - it doesn't delete anything at this point it just closes program or processes, in the worst case it will close or reboot the computer).

*Then* try deleting the program again, I have a friend who had similar problems some time ago and we discovered that she only could get rid of Norton with the original CD being in the drive. This is similar to doing this from the HP application.
The other offered solution (from regedit) is fine but it can be dangerous in case you're not experienced with Regedit enough, you could badly crash your computer in some cases.
Start / Run / type "Regedit" in the box.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE/ MICROSOFT / WINDOWS / CURRENT VERSION/ RUN
In this "run" key are listed the programs that Windows run at startup.
If there's a line in the right side of the window that's related to Norton, delete this value (this line).
It can also be a good occasion to do a bit of (belated) spring cleaning and remove some unnecessary programs (it doesn't actually remove the programs, it prevents them from running at startup) - but one more time, be careful as long as you're not experienced, in the beginning only delete what you *know* you want to get rid of.
Then restart the computer and delete the program from the cd/HP program as previously said.
