I'm using TagEditor 6.5.1.406 build 410 with Excel 2002.
When I open TagEditor and click on File -Open, Excel files are not amongst the choices of file types. When I choose "All documents" I can see the Excel files but if I click on them I get error message 80003 telling me that TagEditor does not recognise the file type. According to all the information on Trados 6.5 I should be able to open Excel files from TagEditor.

No way.
You should be able to open Excel files in 6.5; IIRC (build 410 is a loooong way back...) the inability to open them was a bug that could appear with 6.5.1.
It certainly works in 6.5.2 (and I have no reason to believe it won't do it in 6.5.5). Just be aware that opening an .xls file in TagEditor for the first time will take several minutes (as TE needs to convert all spreadsheet data into tags). Once you have saved the file as .ttx, it will open as usual. (Note that the same applies to opening .ppt files in TE.)

Not at all.
Although T-Window for Excel is still available under T6.5.x, once you have used TagEditor, I don't think you'll go back to T-Window.

Thanks ever such a lot Ralph. I've just updated to 6.5.5 and can open Excel files in TagEditor with no problem. I'll now see if it has solved my MultiTerm problem too!

I read these messages with great interest since I am having exactly the same problem. I get an error message that Tageditor does not recognize xls. So I tried to convert the xls file to ttx and discovered that not only do I not know how to do this but I can't find any information in the various trados guides I have. Could somebody please tell me how to save the excel file in ttx. I am using the most recent version of trados 6.5.5.

I don't know if it works as I haven't got that far yet but a client told me to save an Excel file as a .ttx file you have to click "save bilingual as".

Louise is right - in fact, Save bilingual as... is the default when saving in TagEditor. IOW once you have opened the .xls file, saving it in TE will save the conversion into .ttx.
This, however, depends on being able to open it in TE in the first place - what error message (if any) do you get? Which Excel version is installed on your computer?

Richard, I don't know if this will help you but I believe that although I had installed 6.5 (and TagEditor said it was the 6.5 version), I had actually made a mistake somewhere along the line and only the functions of the early version were available. When I installed 6.5.5 this error must have been rectified automatically - this time I chose the option to install the full version and not just user-defined bits and that seemed to do the trick.

Ralf you hit the problem on the head. I can't open the excel in TE. My error message is: "(80003) Tageditor is unable to open this doucment becasue the file type is not recognized".
Workbench and tageditor are both 6.5.5 build 438. Excel is Excel 2003. OS is Windows XP.
But now I gather that the conversion to ttx should take place automatically in tageditor when I open an excel file. As mentioned above that is not possible since I can't even open the file.

I read your comment about needing to register earlier today and registered immediately. The registration meant certain workbench functions, which previously had not worked, were corrected. But alas no change to the Tagedit/excel problem. Ralf, could it be a memory problem? I only have 256 MB of RAm.

...it worked. I updated to build 439 and as unlikely as it may seem suddenly tageditor works.

What error message (if any) do you get? How long did you wait before aborting the opening process?
I am using Trados 6.5.1.406 (buid 410). Am I doing anything wrong or does this build not support this function. I didn´t use the T-windows.
No idea if you're doing anything wrong, but 6.5.1 is most definitely outdated; this was replaced by build 417 in February, and by build 438/439 in August.
