quick summary. I have been using memoQ for the past two years and noticed no problems whatsoever up until now when clients started to send me SDL packages to translate. Although memoQ does have the option of importing SDL packages, I hate having to create a totally new project every time I import such a package to the program because I need to re-select all of the translation memories and term matches for that particular project and it is driving me mad.
Therefore, I decided to give Trados 2017 a go. About 20 or so projects later, I am this close to losing all my patience with this program.
Here's the thing - my translation memories and my added term bases will not load. I have followed several online tutorials on how to set up TMs and term bases, but whenever I quit the program and re-load my project, these settings magically disappear and everything is then grayed out (Add New Term is disabled, for example) and no memories appear from the previous projects I have done. This is costing me both time and money because there are some very long segments within those packages that have a 100% match, but the program doesn't appear to recognise those at all.
So, my question is as follows (since you are my last hope before I ditch this program completely):
Please, for the love of everything that is sacred and holy, anyone who is familiar with this program, tell me what exactly I have to do when:
- I start a new project,
- I translate that project,
- I finish the project,
to have my memories/term bases appear normally and to have those memories/term bases load for other projects as well so that I may finish a project within hours instead of days.
Any help is appreciated.

So sorry to hear you're having a hard time. There are several things that come to mind that you could do, but I think it would be useful if you help us understand your workflow a bit more.
The first thing I would ask is, where are you adding your TMs and termbases to your project? It's not normal for your assets to disappear when you close the program, but any assets added at the Project level (via Project Settings) will not be available for other projects unless you add them there too.
For example, let's say I have a TM called Ingredients and I get a package from a client called Kitchen Recipes. When I double-click on the package received from my client, it will open as a project with the settings determined by my client, so if my client added TMs or termbases to the package, they will be available when I open the project, but if they didn't, there won't be any TMs or termbases when I first open it. What I would need to do in that case is add my Ingredients TM to the project by going to Project Settings and then adding the TM (Project Settings - Language Pairs - All Language Pairs - Translation Memory and Automated Translation - Use - File-based Translation Memory). Let's say that I also have a termbase called Vegetables. I also need to add it in Project Settings if I want to use it for this project. Once added, both the TM and termbase should be available whenever I come back to this project.
Now let's say that I get a new package from the client, called Christmas Recipes, for which I wish to use the Ingredients TM and the Vegetables termbase. When I open the package from the client a new project will be added to my list, but it will only have the settings that the client has chosen for it, and I will need to once again add my TM and termbase to this package if I wish to use them.
So, basically, every time you get a new package, the TMs and termbases need to be added to it. Doing so manually can get old pretty quickly. I have a client who sends packages every day (sometimes more than one in the same day) that require the same TM and termbase, so I'm not a big fan of applying all my settings to every package manually. Luckily, there's an app to help with that! The app is called Apply Studio Project Template (http://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/apply-studio-project-template/391/). For our example, you could save a template for your Kitchen Recipes project by going to the Projects view, right-clicking on the name of the project and choosing Create Project Template. Then, with the app, apply that template to any new new packages/projects that require the same settings.
Another thing to consider is that TMs and termbases can also be added via Options instead of Project Settings. It's important to understand the difference. When you use Project Settings, TMs and termbases are applied only to the active Project and not to any new or existing projects. When you use Options, the TMs and termbases you add will be the default assets that will be applied to any new projects created by you, but not to any existing projects or to projects created from packages received from clients.
I don't know if any of this info is helpful for your issue. I think it would be very helpful if you could post some screenshots or maybe record a video and show us what you're seeing to help you troubleshoot further. ▲ Collapse

Sometimes the list is populated well, other times the program gives me an error saying it cannot find the file, even though I have added the file manually. This happens with multiple translation memories, not just one.
In List B, however, when I add a new termbase or load an existing one and return to the editor, the option Add New Term (Ctrl+F2) is sometimes grayed out. It doesn't matter if I click on a word in the source text, the target text, both texts or if I don't select any words at all, it is a lottery getting that option to work. Sometimes it works like a charm, other times I have to restart the program several times for it to work.
This can't be normal, can it? Or am I not adding the files in the right manner? ▲ Collapse

Project type: Create a new project based on a project template > Default (or a template I have) > Next
Project Details: Name (For instance Project 1)
Location: /Studio/ as a subfolder in a project folder I have already created for the project
Next
Project languages: I choose source and target language > Next
Project files > Add files (or Add folder)> I add the files or folder > Next
Translation memory and Automated Translation > Use > File based translation memory > Next
Termbases: Use > File based multiterm termbase > Next
Project preparation > Prepare without project TM
I have not experienced that this way of doing it has created any problems.
And by the way, I have my personal TMs and termbases in a special folder on my harddisk, although often I get packages from the customer with a TM included, which then, of course, also is attached. But I have not had to add that either each time.

Have you tried adding your TMs at the All Language Pairs - Translation Memory and Automated Translation memory? Unless you have some very specific TM requirements or multilingual projects, you don't need to set the TM at the specific pair language level. Does this make any difference?

Sometimes the list is populated well, other times the program gives me an error saying it cannot find the file, even though I have added the file manually. This happens with multiple translation memories, not just one.
I'm assuming you haven't moved the TMs to a different folder, right? It's odd that this happens, but if Studio says it can't find the file, it probably means it's not longer at the location you specified. I would second Roy's suggestion. It's always a good idea to have a centralized folder for all your TMs instead of storing them within the Project folder structure. This ensures that you always know where your TMs are and that they don't get moved accidentally.

This is not normal at all, provided that all your settings are right. Two things to check for your Termbases under Project Settings:
1. Do they have the right language combination for the project?
2. Are they enabled?

First, instead of opening a single file and translate it, create a project, in which you will add your translation memories, termbases, and other resources, such as AutoSuggest dictionaries. When you finish the project setup, the tool will ask you if you want to save the template, you said yes, and save it with a name.
