Hi,
I'm having problems with the demo version of wordfast classic. When I go into word then click the wordfast icon, it brings up the error message 'microsoft word has stopped working'. Word then shuts down and I recive the message, 'word has automatically saved the normal doc'. I have also noticed that when I open word it asks me whether I want to save the normal doc, to which I reply no. I'm not really sure what the problem is, does anyone have any advice? Check whether you have a Send to Bluetooth button/icon/menu option in Word (it's normally under the Add-ins tab). If so, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, uninstall everything Bluetooth-related and reboot. This should solve the problem. For more info, see this wiki article.

Otherwise you can find detailed installation instructions for Word 2013 here.

If you need Bluetooth, you can let Windows re-discover it and install up-to-date drivers. The aforementioned problem is caused by outdated drivers.

another question Apr 12, 2014

I have another question, how do I save my translation memory settings? I am trying to lower the fuzzy threshold. I double click on fuzzy threshold, input the number and save my setup via save setup as. However, when I go back into setup it still remains at the default level. I would be grateful for any help, thanks

wordfast.ini Apr 12, 2014

Everything you change in the Setup dialog box (what you get when pressing Ctrl+Alt+W or clicking on the toolbar's right-most icon) gets stored by default in a small text file named wordfast.ini, which is located (also by default) in the same folder as wordfast.dot (usually Word's Startup folder, the location of which can be found here).

When I say "everything", it means not only the fuzzy threshold, but also which TM and glossaries you are using, what abbreviations you have entered, your MT settings (if applicable) etc.

Every time you make a change to your settings and close the Setup dialog box, you should get the following prompt:

You can store your settings into another .ini than wordfast.ini, and/or to another location than Word's Startup folder. This is done via the Save setup as... button, as you already noticed.

Thanks Apr 12, 2014

When I make a change to my settings and close the setup dialog box I get that prompt and click ok. However, when I go back into setup my settings haven't been saved and the fuzzy threshold is at the default setting.

Check Startup folder Apr 12, 2014

I would check your Word's Startup folder: do you see the files wordfast.ini and wordfast.cfg there (in addition to wordfast.dot)? It sounds like Wordfast doesn't have sufficient rights to create and/or modify the files it needs for saving its and your settings. Press Ctrl+Alt+P (in Word, with no translation session open) and paste the output (current setup.docx), it could provide clues about your problem.

Path to wordfast.dot Apr 12, 2014

I was hoping to see the first two lines (right before System specs). On my system, they look like this:

Current setup: C:\Users\Dominique\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup\Wordfast.ini - domcom
Wordfast installation: C:\Users\Dominique\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup\wordfast.dot

Do yours also point to C:\Users\etc. ?

Manually edit your .ini Apr 12, 2014

James Greenfield wrote:

Wordfast installation: C:\Users\james\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP\wordfast.dot

This path should be fine. I have no idea why Wordfast is not saving changes you make to your fuzzy threshold, but you can manually edit your wordfast.ini. Just open it in a text editor (eg. Notepad) and look for the line that starts with:

Segmentation=0075

Change 75 to whatever value (from 50 to 99) you want to use. Reopen the setup dialog box and verify the change did "stick".

Sorry and thanks Apr 12, 2014

Hi, thanks so much for your help, I made a mistake. I didn't realise the minimum threshold was 50, I was trying to set it lower. Sorry to have troubled you, I should have thought about that earlier but it just occurred to me.

Actually, it's not obvious, since there's no clue about the range of "legal" values in the interface. You would have needed to check the reference manual (page 49/119) to get that information.

Some other tools accept lower fuzzy threshold values. For instance, the lowest possible value in Wordfast Pro is 40%. In Trados, it's even lower (30%). In memoQ, I think the minimum is 1%.
