Good morning dear colleagues,
I'm trying to log in IATE to look up some terms and now I am asked to log in. The worse thing is, they don't let me use the guest ID guest password!
Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone know what to do? IATE is giving me so much trouble!!
Thanks and greetings to everyone,
Anabel | | | unfortunetly yes ! | Jul 6, 2005 |

Hello,
As far as I know, IATE has officially become available only for EU-related translators, but the good news is that Eurodic is apparently back in business ).

Thanks, Maria, I'm sorry for posting again something that had been already said, I hadn't seen it.
I have to add, though, that eurodicautom no longer works for me, so I don't know what to do!!! I wonder why they're doing this | | | Anabel Martínez Іспанія Local time: 00:26 англійская → іспанская + ... ПАЧЫНАЛЬНІК ТЭМЫ Eurodic works, yessss | Jul 6, 2005 |
I had a panicky moment because eurodicautom page didn't work for me either, but it does now again!
It's a pity because I was getting used to IATE, it was a good resource! And eurodicautom is no longer being implemented, so in a few months I guess it will be obsolete It's unfair that only "official" translators can use IATE. | | | Tania Martins Партугалія Local time: 23:26 Член нямецкая → партугальская + ... Thanks, Tania, but, at least for me, it doesn't work even using guest as an ID and password, it seems that real IDs are required now.... Hope it's only temporary, though! | |

According to Margaret Marks's blog (http://www.margaret-marks.com/Transblawg/), there are plans to make IATE available to the public again next year.

It could well be that they want to get a stable system before they allow it to be accessed by (tens of) thousands of users simultaneously.
I also hope that they are able to ensure a much higher level of quality than Eurodicautom (which was surely one of the worst resources of all time, in terms of both the quality and the scope of the terminology).
In the meantime, you can always use EUR-LEX and ScadPlus for EU-related terminology research - much more comprehensive than Eurodicautom, of course, and *always* right! ▲ Collapse | | | IATE login problems - Answer from the IATE Support Team | Jul 6, 2005 |
Hello everyone,
I experienced the same problems as everyone. I sent an email to the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the EU to ask what is going on and if they the public will be able to register. I have pasted their answer below.

"Hello,
The IATE database has been put into production in the EU's translation services in summer last year. It is not yet accessible to the public. The URL you have used is a link to a test database; when we noticed that this url has been published in various newsgroups on the internet we had to block the access to avoid performance problems. The system is today simply not ready to be used by the public. However, the development that are necessary IATE available to external users with a satisfying level of service are ongoing. We hope that you will be able to use IATE from the first quarter of 2006.
Until then Eurodicautom will remain accessible (http://europa.eu.int/eurodicautom/Controller). Please note that Eurodicautom had some technical problems recently. The system is, however, up and running again.
Best regards,
IATE Support Team

Hope this helps,

Thanks, Effie and Robin! That makes everything clear enough: I just assumed that Eurodicautom was not running anymore due to the public launch of IATE, but I guess that's not the (main) reason. Until then, back to the Eurodic, and to the resources Robin has so efficiently pointed out! | | | Tania Martins Партугалія Local time: 23:26 Член нямецкая → партугальская + ... No, it works for me. I think it gets very busy, sometimes.

I too have been unable to access IATE since this morning, which has been somewhat frustrating as most of my work is EU-related. I haven't found IATE to be the most accurate resource, but it has certainly been helpful on occasion - especially as the EC are very particular about the terminology used in the corridors of Brussels.

Eurodicautum is of no use whatsoever in my language pair (LV-EN), so it does make me wonder why freelance translators working with the new official languages have so few 'official' resources available to them.
Surely, if the EC is sub-contracting work to agencies, who obviously make use of freelancers, then they should provide access to the IATE.

I really look forward to it. In the mean time all colleagues should be aware that Eurodicautom is not good in terms of liguistic reliability. One of the major problems is that translations given for a very specific context can be mistaken for general meanings. Plain errors are also in there.
I have the impression that Eurodicautom has been the source of a great deal of mistakes circulating around in TMs, translations available on the web and glossaries. The terrible thing is that now wrong Eurodic entries seem to be confirmed by other wrong sources.
Please be very careful with Eurodicautom results until 1st quarter of 2006!
